About
Manifesto
In my dream world, theatre becomes an art form of the masses again. These days, all to often, theatre is seen as an elite art form, something fancy. I want theatre to be available, accessible, considered. Which is where this site comes in, it’s here to answer your questions and let you know what’s happening in Toronto. – Megan Mooney, Editor
What is Mooney on Theatre?
Mooney on Theatre is a website about theatre, edited by Megan Mooney (which you likely already figured out). It includes contributions about specific productions from writers with a variety of levels of experiences with theatre, as well as thoughts from Megan on theatre in general.
So, what makes it different than other theatre websites?
Well, the aim here is to help people know what to expect from a show, so that maybe they won’t be intimidated by it. People in the theatre industry always seem so shocked when they hear that people are intimidated by theatre, but the truth is, they really are.
Bottom line is, we wanted to find a way to make theatre more accessible to people, let people know they don’t have to have theatre training, or be ‘culturally rich’ or any of those other things to enjoy theatre, they just have to go.
This is done through 4 categories:
Reviews
Well, there’s the standard reviews, where whenever possible there are at least two points of view.
Profiles
This is pretty broad, sometimes it’ll be a profile of a person, sometimes a venue, sometimes a festival, it’s a pretty open category…
Musings
Megan is a theatre junkie. Theatre junkies are always full of opinions and thoughts. This will be the category where Megan gets to let some of those musings out of her brain and onto the printed word.
Answers
Ever wonder why theatre celebrations always happen on Mondays? Or, why do the lights flash or a bell ring at intermission? Where the heck did that big backdrop come from all of a sudden? Theatre is fully of interesting things that people know if they have theatre experience, but that for folks without lots of experience are just confusing. This category will be the place where I answer questions sent in by readers, as well as any theatre questions I’ve heard in my travels. We don’t for a second think that we know all the answers, but we’re resourceful, we’ll find out for you.
Resources
Okay, we’ll admit it, this bit isn’t up and running yet. When it is though, it will have a set of links and information that will help you navigate theatre in Toronto.
