Short Story Long (A Literary Tour de Force)- 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

July 4th, 2010

Toronto Fringe contest winner shows some great performances and writing for the stage.

I’ll admit, after a full day of Fringing and walking around in the sun, my feet were dragging by 10:30 on my way to the Tarragon to see Short Story Long. Not only was it late, but it was listed as a drama and I prayed that I’d be able to keep my eyes open through the more serious subject matter. By the time the show finished though, I and every other audience member were more awake than ever. Read the rest of this entry »

acTOR (Large Dog Theatre)- 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

July 4th, 2010

Large Dog Theatre’s acTOR is a show for anyone who’s been forced to sit through the worst and most cliched of film. It spares absolutely no genre from it’s light hearted mocking and attempted to answer the most important of questions: can infomercials be artistically fulfilling? Read the rest of this entry »

ONEymoon (Dutch Girl Productions) – 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

July 3rd, 2010

Finding a soul mate is hard work. This has been the subject matter of countless pieces of literature, paintings and rom-com films. Not only is it hard work, it’s often unrewarded and the idea of just remaining single and forgetting about all those pesky mating games can be appealing. Christel Bartelse has taken it one step further in her one person show ONEymoon, currently playing in the Toronto Fringe Festival, by declaring that she will marry herself. A simple heist turns into a tense and hilarious hostage situation in Toronto Fringe show

During the evening at the Fringe Club, you may notice a van suspiciously parked in the alleyway nearby, plastered with posters. You may also notice a clown exiting the vehicle and luring a small group of innocent bystanders into the van, only to have another clown rush up with a sack of money and drive away with the newfound hostages. There’s no need to worry. This is the set-up for the extremely entertaining The Getaway, one of the BYOV’s currently playing at the Toronto Fringe. Read the rest of this entry »

You and Me and Me and You (hearts4noses)- 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

Improv Fringe show promises new play with every performance in Toronto this summer.

One of the biggest things that affects an improv show, other than the talent of the performers, is the audience. So much can ride on their reactions and energy and end up sometimes making or breaking a show. This is especially the case with Hearts4noses’ You and Me and Me and You currently playing at the Toronto Fringe, a play that is entirely improvised based on suggestions from the audience. Texting is the name of the game for this Toronto Fringe show.

Aaaaand they’re off! The 2010 Toronto Fringe kicked off last night. The Fringe tent was full of buzz, the Art Wank alley was full of talent, and I started things off with a late night show, called L8R MTL in the Tarragon Extra Space. Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Woyzeck- Red Light District

New translation of German play brings insane circus to Toronto

Reid Linforth as Woyzeck and Eve Wylden as the Doctor in Woyzeck 2010

…What to say about Woyzeck? You know those plays you go and see when you’re in the mood for some simple entertainment that doesn’t require any deep thought? Red Light District’s Woyzeck, currently playing at the Lower Ossington Theatre, is not one of those plays. It’s odd, it’s abstract and it’s definitely something you need to be in the mood for. If you ARE in the mood for it though, it’s definitely worth checking out. Read the rest of this entry »

Play about MS showcases intense and moving performances for the Toronto stage.

Christopher Kelk and Faye Lavin in Duet for One 2010

Stage Toronto’s Duet for One, which opened in the Tarragon Mainspace this weekend, is definately one of those plays you see if you’re in the right mood for it. It’s a pretty heavy experience, but despite a slow beginning it’s one worth taking the journey for. Read the rest of this entry »

Toronto play about MS makes return appearance next week.

by Lucy Allen

Writing for Mooney on Theatre has given me plenty of oppurtunities to experience and enjoy all sorts of theatre. Recently, though, it gave me yet another oppurtunity when I got to meet with actress Faye Lavin for my very first interview. We sat drinking coffee (or hot chocolate in my case, coffee is gross) and discussed Lavin’s role in Duet for One, which opens next week at the Tarragon Mainspace. Read the rest of this entry »

Second City Toronto Comedy Show Entertaining for Entire Family and Then Some!

So you want to introduce your kids to the wonderful world of theatre but you realize that Hamlet is not exactly up their alley. Well, worry not, for Second City has provided Maravilla, a family show that everyone will enjoy. And believe me, it’s not a show to be missed. Read the rest of this entry »
