Just For Laughs Festival: All-Star Gala
By Lucy
by Lucy Allen
Last night I had planned a fun-filled evening with my laundry, and suddenly found out last minute that there were tickets available to the Just For Laughs All-star Gala event at Massey Hall, just one of many events going on for the Just For Laughs Toronto Festival this week. Normally I hate to rush, but having grown up watching and loving Just for Laughs on television I couldn’t resist trying. After a lot of running and a talk with a very helpful and forgiving festival employee, I finally managed to get in with about two minutes to spare. And I can safely say it was well worth the effort.

So, the Toronto Fringe Festival is done, you’re wondering what the heck to do with yourself, and then you realise, wait, I’m in Toronto! There’s always stuff going on in Toronto!
This week it’s the Toronto Just for Laughs Festival.
Fringe for Free – Love and Human Extinction, Saturday at 11pm
By Megan Mooney
Love and Human Extinction, because, what could be more romantic than human extinction?
We’re giving away a pair of tickets to the 11pm show of Love and Human Extinction playing at 11pm at Royal St. George’s Auditorium.
To enter the draw, all you need to do is leave a comment* sometime before 8pm today (Saturday) to be entered for tickets to tonight’s show.

"Hey, Marilyn" – capricorn 9 productions
By Adam Collier
I don’t know what to make of “Hey, Marilyn” (which recently closed on schedule at the St. Lawrence Center for the Arts, after an eight-day run).
The cast numbers in the double-digits, there is a five-piece band performing on stage, the choreography (by Tracy Cairns-Sharpe) features some elaborately plotted sequences, and there are some terrific players onstage.
But the huge spectrum diffuses the action to the point where “Hey, Marilyn” (a capricorn 9 production) is just as much about artifice and history as Monroe. Which – in itself – is not a problem. The way so much information is handled here however, is a problem.
If you can get tickets to Lipsynch today, then do it!

A full review is to follow, but just in case you are still wondering whether or not to get tickets to this show for the last performance today, then do it. Of course, I’m pretty sure they’re sold out, but they may have a waiting list, or perhaps if you go there in person and beg enough?
If you are lucky enough to already have tickets (YAY!) be forewarned that it’s ‘woofstock’ this weekend, making getting around bloody difficult. Front and Wellington are both closed from Jarvis to Yonge, so you can’t get past Front Street by car at all. I’m not sure how the North-South transit stuff is being effected. And walking is some special kind of hell because the place is JAMMED with people and dogs.
What I’m saying is give yourself lots of time to get there.

Theatre in Toronto I wish I had time to see this weekend
By Megan Mooney
By Megan Mooney
So, having a baby rocks! Really. I love it. But it has elements I don’t like, for instance, the fact that I don’t get to see nearly as much theatre as I’d like to.
In light of that, I figured I’d let you know what I’m sad to be missing out on this weekend.
We ain't terrorists – Second City
By Dana Lacey
By Dana Lacey

We ain’t terrorists was a one-night-only Second City show featuring two stand-out stand-up acts by Canuck comedians Ali Rizvi and Dave Merheje. It’s a lighthearted (and dirty) look at North America’s post 9/11 us-against-them attitude. Read the rest of this entry »
Why the heck do the reviewers always talk about other audience members?!?!
By Megan Mooney
We got an anonymous comment on the Balls post from someone who we obviously touched a nerve with.
They brought up something that has kind of come up before, so I feel like maybe I should use a full post to address it, not just a reply in the comments.
What sparked this particular post was the anonymous commenter’s statement:
I really only feel the need to hear the WRITER’s opinion, and not those of the people sitting around them during the performance.
I say, if you’re not part of the theatre industry, you can still give valuable reviews on theatrical pieces. But please, keep it honest, relevant, and your own, otherwise these reviews are biased and useless for potential audiences.
