Theatre in Toronto I wish I had time to see this weekend

By Megan Mooney

So, having a baby rocks!  Really.  I love it.  But it has elements I don’t like, for instance, the fact that I don’t get to see nearly as much theatre as I’d like to.

In light of that, I figured I’d let you know what I’m sad to be missing out on this weekend.

Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31, 2009:

the aurdre lorde workshopanitAFRIKA! dub theatre (AnitAFRIKA! Dub Theatre, 62 Fraser)

2nd night of staged workshop readings of solo works.  Doors open at 6:30. 416-434-1823 for more information.

*****

The Beautiful and the Dammed – Les Coquettes  (Revival, 783 College)

Burlesque cabaret from a company who really knows their stuff.  This time with working around the theme of the 7 deadly sins.    Starts at 8pm, doors open at 7 (and the place fills up fast, I highly recommend getting there for 7, because otherwise it’s standing room only)  Tickets are $25 at the door

*****

Book of JudithThe Theatre Centre, The Suck and Blow Collective, Absit Omen Theatre and Die in Debt (Centre For Addiction And Mental Health, outdoor tent, 1001 Queen W)

A musical focusing on the story of Judith Snow – a quadriplegic authour.  Technically this isn’t today only, it’s at 2:30 today, 8pm today, and then closes up tomorrow with an 11am matinee.  Tickets are $20.  Call 416-538-0988 for more details.

*****

DishboomDisporaRadicals (Factory Theatre, 125 Bathrust)

There are two more days of this South Asian Performance Festival which includes Cowboys and Indians, a show I am very sad to miss.  Cost and times vary, but there are shows Saturday and Sunday.  I’ve found the easiest place to read the info is here.

*****

Doubt, A Parable – Canadian Stage Company (Bluma Appel Theatre, 27 Front Street E)

This one has been getting mixed reviews, but I’m still interested in this show that closes tonight.  There are two chances to see this one today – 2pm and 8pm. At least Dana got a chance to see it.  Ticket prices range on this one, and there is rush seating (although, who knows if there will be tickets left.) Get more info at the CanStage website or call 416-368-3110.

*****

Eternal HydraCrow’s Theatre (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander)

So, um, Crow’s Theatre has been VERY busy that last little while.  I didn’t see this one, but Olya did.  She didn’t love it, but her show-partner did.  The shows people disagree on are the shows I’m generally most interested in.  There are three shows left.  Today at 2:30 for $15, today at 8pm for $30, and Sunday at 2pm PWYC.  More information here, or by calling 416-975-8555.

*****

Playdate – RobotBlast Productions (Centre for the Arts, 263 Adelaide W, Suite 513)

I don’t know much about this one, but given my new role as a mum I suspect it’s something that would be good to see.  You can see it tonight at 8, or tomorrow at 2pm.  You can get tickets by emailing tickets@robotblast.com, but don’t bother too much with the website, it’s a work in progress.  Tickets are $12, or $8 if you’re a student or a senior

*****

Horus The God – Alexander Winfield (Kensington Market, SW Corner of Augusta and Oxford)

I love the idea of theatre on a random corner in Kensington Market.  It’s at 6pm on Sunday and is PWYC.  for more info call 416-262-2945

*****

Genet’s Divas And Delinquents – Benefit for Jean Genet (Goodhandy’s 120 Church St)

A hodgepodge of stuff including burlesque and dance.  8pm on Sunday.  Tickets are $10
