36 Little Plays about Hopeless Girls
Written and directed by Aurora Stewart de Peña

Our Show
Birdtown and Swanville presents 36 Little Plays about Hopeless Girls at the 2009 Toronto Fringe Festival. This series of one-minute plays features music and dances among various interwoven plot lines about baseball, credit card debt, millipedes and Ny’pha, a helpful bathroom tissue collector from the world of We’an!

This play focuses on the challenges, hopes, pessimism and occasional optimism common to young Canadian women. It also talks about depression, love, poverty, mothers good and bad, insecurity, social dynamics, abortion, crappy retail jobs, excessive drinking, loneliness and escapism. This show is, as the title suggests, a series of (very) short plays. Though each one tells its own story, the plays are pieces of a whole, collectively interweaving to promote a larger world. These stories are based on the sometimes bleak, but always funny lives of young women in Toronto.

Written and directed by Aurora Stewart de Peña, 36 Little Plays about Hopeless Girls includes performances by Donna Maloney, Cara Gee, Liz Peterson, Monique Moses, Aurora Stewart de Peña, Nika Mistruzzi, Sochi Fried, Jolene Devoe, Julia Lederer, Laura McCoy, Lauren Bride, Rebecca Applebaum, and Nicole Stamp; stage managed by Sofia Bohdanowicz, costumes by Devon Tyler Dagworthy, and set design by Melissa Neil.
