Coming to Toronto Fringe 2009: ICARUS REDUX

From Press Release

A father who can’t handle his son. A son who can’t handle the world.  Theatre veterans Kim Purtell (Cul de Sac, How it Works) and Jonathan Whittaker (Nigredo Hotel) join with newcomers in Icarus Redux -  a new Canadian tragicomedy by first-time playwright and director Sean O’Neill.  Re-imagining the famous myth, Icarus Redux is a contemporary queer text exploring the nature of love and a search for redemption.

World Premiere of ICARUS REDUX  By Sean O’Neill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The myth of Icarus comes to life in Open Season Theatre’s dramatic reimagining of the ancient story for the 2009 Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival. Icarus Redux takes the story of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun, and Daedalus, the father who made his wings, and turns it upside down, weaving in contemporary story of a father struggling with grief, memory, and vision following the death of his son.

First time playwright Sean O’Neill (Degrassi: TNG, 1-800-Missing) directs Dora-nominated actor Jonathan Whittaker (Nigredo Hotel, Dirty Dancing, upcoming CBC pilot Throwing Stones) and newcomer Alex Fiddes in the roles of Daedalus and The Boy. Along with assistant director Bethany Jillard (My Name is Rachel Corrie, How it Works, Tough! – Dora nomination), Dora-winning lighting designer Kimberly Purtell (Cul de Sac, How it Works) and design team Kasey Hinton, Brendon O’Neill, and Erin Freedman, O’Neill creates a bleak yet beautiful visual landscape underscored by composer James Scott’s original music.

Opening on July 2 at 6:30PM at St. Vladimir’s Theatre, 620 Spadina Ave., Icarus Redux runs until July 12, 2009. For tickets and information, call (416) 966-1062, www.fringetoronto.com or www.icarusredux.com.
