Osculum Productions is thrilled to present Ariel Dorfman’s award-winning masterpiece DEATH AND THE MAIDEN on the twentieth anniversary of the regime change in Chile that inspired the play. Directed by Kurt Spenrath, the show will run from May 5-22 at the St Lawrence Centre for the Arts.

DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is a moral thriller about a woman who believes that a mysterious stranger who has unexpectedly arrived at her home is the same doctor who, many years before, under a military dictatorship, tortured and raped her. The play’s title is taken from a piece of music once loved by Paulina but now reviled as it was played repeatedly during her torture sessions. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is a provocative blend of sex, violence, black humor . . . and Schubert.

Ariel Dorfman began writing DEATH AND THE MAIDEN in the mid-1980s when he was in exile from Chile. It was not until his country’s return to democracy in 1990 that he was able to finally complete the play. A workshop production debuted in Chile in March 1991, followed by its world premiere in London in July of that year. After winning the Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play, the show had its Broadway debut in March 1992. The original Broadway cast included Glenn Close as Paulina (a performance for which she received a Tony Award), Richard Dreyfuss as Gerardo, and Gene Hackman as Roberto. In 1994, film director Roman Polanski made the feature film of DEATH AND THE MAIDEN starring Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.

Ariel Dorfman is a Chilean-American novelist, playwright, essayist, academic and human rights activist. Dorfman’s work often deals with the horrors of tyranny and, in later works, the trials of exile. Other notable works include Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark, The Other Side, and Picasso’s Closet. His works have been translated into more than 40 languages and performed in over 100 countries.

This production stars Yanet Candelario (writer/performer in the film Cesar’s World) in her Canadian theatrical debut as Paulina, Gemini-nominated actor Trevor Duplessis (In a World Created by a Drunken God) as her husband Gerardo, and Juan Carlos Velis (writer/performer in the one-man show Borderlines, The Refugee Hotel) as the mysterious stranger, Roberto. Founded by Yanet Candelario, Osculum Productions is a Toronto-based independent production company that specializes in universal dramas and comedies that reflect the complexity of modern life.
