Five for Twenty (Or Less)
Our cheap Toronto theatre picks for this week have been inspired by none other than our very own editor, Miss Megan Mooney. Every week, Megan highlights the shows that she’s most excited about seeing in our weekly eye-catching theatre listings. (And if she could clone herself 500 times over, she would see them all!). I’ve decided to further highlight her choices by choosing the least expensive of Megan’s selections and sharing them with you in this week’s Five for Twenty (Or Less) post. So, grab a little cash (we promise, you’ll only need a little!), and see cheap theatre that makes Megan’s heart flutter into a flurry of excitement! Enjoy!1) Featuring Loretta (Factory Theatre)
– This George F. Walker play features Loretta, a young widow, AND all of the suitors who line up to court her. A comedic romp about young love impeccably crafted by the beloved Walker.
– Previews are on until tomorrow, May 5; the show officially opens May 6 and runs to June 27 at Factory Theatre (125 Bathurst). Showtimes are Tue-Sat 8 pm, Sun 2 pm.

2) Strip Spelling Bee (Honeysuckle)
– A theatrical game show with naked contestants? We’re in!
– See this naked bee, tomorrow, May 6, at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander). Sign up to participate at 8:30 pm or just watch the show, which starts at 9 pm.
– It’s only $10 to watch, but if you’re a brave soul, it’s free for participants!
3) Hana’s Suitcase (Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People)
– This is a return engagement for the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People, and we at Mooney on Theatre couldn’t be happier to see it back again. Hana’s Suitcase is inspired by the true story of a child’s suitcase that arrived at Tokyo’s Children’s Holocaust Centre in March 2000. The suitcase was marked with the name Hana Brady, Hana’s birthdate and the word “orphan”. The Children’s Centre’s curator went on a mission to find Hana’s story, which inspired both a book and the play Hana’s Suitcase.

4) Potluck Festival (fu-GEN)
– Acclaimed artistic director Nina Lee Aquino’s Asian-Canadian theatre company presents a theatre conference and staged readings of new works by Camellia Koo, David Yee, Byron Abalos and others.

5) Sunday On The Rocks (Robinson Street Co-op 2)
– Four roommates drink and talk about sex, religion, abortion and feeling lost in this comedy. As a 28-year-old, this sounds exactly like me! I’m sure anyone can relate – we all once faced the quarter-life crisis, I’m sure : ) And, as if you needed more of a reason to see this relevant show, Rosemary Doyle of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding fame stars.
– Opens May 6 and runs to May 23 at Bread and Circus (299 Augusta), Thu-Sat 7:30 pm, Sun 6 pm, mat Sat 3 pm.
