The Waves:Toronto 2010 Fringe Preview

From Press Release

World Premiere of THE WAVES at
2010  Toronto Fringe Festival

Friendship. Desire. Jealousy. Forbidden Love. Loss. Finding one’s place in the World. Considered to be Virginia Woolf’s most personal novel, The Waves is adapted for the stage by Toronto actor/director Brenley Charkow, and will make its world-premiere at the 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival.

“I wanted to create a production that would invoke the imagination and provoke the mind. Woolf’s beautifully dark novel was the perfect canvas for us to play in.”, says Charkow, “Her story is equally as poignant today as it was when it was originally written.”

Set in England in the early 1900’s, THE WAVES examines the lives of six friends from adolescence through to adulthood. Weaving movement and original sound composition through Woolf’s words, Charkow also utilizes the talents of Canada’s most exciting young actors.

The Waves cast and creative consists of both Canadian Theatre veterans and some new emerging talents, including 8 year Shaw Festival veteran ANDREW BUNKER (Shaw Fest, CanStage, Buddies), with MARK CRAWFORD (TNB, CanStage, STC); AARON STERN (LKTYP, Theatre Calgary, DreamNorth); ASHLEIGH HENDRY(Modern Times, Stratford Conservatory); LANA SUGARMAN (Classical Theatre Projects, SilverMist); and JILLIAN HARRIS (Queen’s U.).

THE WAVES: Original Novel by Virginia Woolf, Adapted & Directed by Brenley Charkow (Grand Theatre, Ch’town Fest, Drayton Ent.) Original Score/Sound Design: Emilio Guim (Te-Amim); Lighting Design: Julia Vandergraaf (Shaw Festival, Grand Theatre); Costume Design: Alex Amini (ActingUpStage, Light in the Piazza)
