The Tiki Bikini Beach Paradise Party A-Go-Go! – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release

Surfers and Hodads, Gals and Guys, Beachettes and Muscle Men, get ready to catch a wave to the most whacked-out, Fantiki Beach party around!
It’s time for “The Tiki Bikini Beach Paradise Party A-Go-Go!”

A musical comedy celebration of the Beach Party films of the 1960’s. Freddie, Jeanette and their beach pals plan to celebrate the final weeks of summer vacation by throwing an outta sight party! Everything would be copacetic if it wasn’t for feared beach villain, “The Big Tuna” who controls “Bikini Beach” the best beach for a party in all of Hawaii. Looks like only a surf-off between The Big Tuna and the gang will settle who rules the beach.

The Beach Party movies of the 1960’s are remembered fondly for bikini-clad teens twisting on the beach whilst popularizing surf music.  Fans of Frankie and Annette will not be disappointed in this production that celebrates not only the hit films of the 1960’s, but is an homage to the era all around. Using the Beach Party films as its main focus, this show also gives nods to other popular 1960’s institutions such as “Gilligan’s Island” and “Scooby Doo”. Those who lived through the era the first time will be taken back to a time when twisting and singing on the beach was enough fun to last all summer long. Younger generations will delight in witnessing a time when teens were “unplugged” and worried more about their surf boards and hair than cutting-edge technology.  This show is a celebration of joy and youthful energy, and through its loving parody of the era seeks to remind people of a time of life not so far gone in years, but seemingly forgotten in our current existence. It features seven classic Beach Party songs and three original ones written by Allison Beula and Jeffery Straker.

Allison Beula is a director, choreographer, performer and instructor who boasts a list of credits that include being on the faculty for: The Randolph Academy For The Performing Arts, The Avenue Road Arts School, Arts For Children and Youth of Toronto.  She is a two-time recipient of the Ontario Arts Council’s Artists in Education Grant, as well as the  winner of The Norman Jewison Filmmaker Award.  She holds a B.A.A, and is a graduate of The Second City Conservatory Program.  She has directed, choreographed and performed in dozens of regional productions; and her choreographed video of Jeffery Straker’s “Hypnotized” hit “Much More Music’s Top 10” in 2009.

The show is premiering as part of the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, and opens on July 6, running through until July 17 at the Tarragon Theatre, mainspace. Local surf band “The von Drats” will be performing live on stage at every performance.  This feel good musical will get your toes tapping and will have you feeling nostalgic for the carefree fun of yester-year.
