I Remember Mama – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release

“Sometimes their stories go with them or are forgotten, but I remember Mama…hold on to them – all of you, because they are priceless, and part of your heart and soul”.

Toronto – Three women, born in different countries, but destined to be joined together in a common cause: moulding the life of Julia DeSotto, the creator and star of I Remember Mama. Julia plays all three extraordinary women …her mother [from Estonia], her grandmother [from Italy], and her mother-in-law [from Scotland] in this heart-warming and funny tribute … telling their stories and revealing their strength, their insight, and their courage. I Remember Mama is about families and their legacies.

Julia was last seen at the Toronto Fringe Festival to great reviews as the demented Lorene in the dark musical comedy Death to Dating. Favourite plays include Les Belles Soeurs and Deathtrap at the Toronto Centre of the Performing Arts, Bedful of Foreigners at Harbourside Playhouse, Nunsense 1 and 2 with Theatre Unlimited and Mona in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Julia keeps busy with character roles for television and film and lots of commercials. She’s also a fitness specialist for seniors.

I Remember Mama is directed by Anne Wootten, a veteran director and choreographer of theatre, television, and film. She was Resident Director of the CanStage productions of Larry’s Party and Urinetown. She also directed the world premiere of On Albert Street at Theatre Aquarius and the revival of Colette: the Colour of Love at TIFT and CBC Radio. Anne spent eight seasons at the Stratford Festival as Consulting Director/Choreographer on such productions as The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, Gypsy, and Guys and Dolls. She has also choreographed films for Bette Midler, Patrick Dempsey, Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick, Chris Farley and Brian Dennehy.

Music is provided by Roberto Bacci, an international performer and composer. He has toured as a pop and jazz pianist in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the US and Canada. In addition to working on television programs such as Anne of Green Gables and Wind at My Back, Roberto has composed for the CBC and various commercials and corporate projects. Roberto is currently working on a personal cultural anthropological documentary and poetry compilation book in honour of his Tuscan heritage.

I Remember Mama is produced by Sandy Evans.
