Rabbit Hole – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release

When the only way out is through…

Rabbit Hole tells the story of a family dealing with a tragic loss.  Becca and Howie lean on their family to put their lives back together after losing their 4yr old son Danny to a tragic car accident.  Eight months of mourning in their own ways, leave Becca and Howie spiraling down a rabbit hole, with no clear way to get out.  From Jason the teenager who had the misfortune of driving down their street that fateful day to Becca’s mother Nat and sister Izzy, all of the characters in this play confront their despair through comedy, wit and strength.  Rabbit Hole…. When the only way out is through.

The Works Department is proud to bring Rabbit Hole to The Fringe Festival for its Toronto debut.  With 5 Tony award nominations and a Pulitzer Prize for playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, Rabbit Hole brilliantly unfolds the emotional conflict of a family dealing with anguish.  Director Rick Rose carefully and intentionally leads the cast into a place of authenticity so as not to rely on the ease of a ‘weepy’ one-note adaptation.  With Rick’s direction the cast delicately balances their characters in a place of truthfulness. Marco Timpano, a Fringe stage veteran and Linda A. Palmieri are joined by Eric Cabral, Devon Hubka and the seasoned brilliance of Marcia Bennett.  Although this is Marcia’s first run at Fringe, she is well remembered for her role in Madre for Aluna Theatre Company which garnered her a Dora Award nomination, a recurring role as May Silverstone in the award winning Slings and Arrows and most memorably her part as John Cusack’s Mother in the very popular feature film, Serendipity.

Rabbit Hole is most recently thought of for the feature film adaptation that earned several Academy Award nominations.  So compelling was the New York Times Review on Lindsay-Abaire’s stage version of Rabbit Hole, that Nicole Kidman had the rights to it immediately optioned for her film company. Thus, it is with great pride that The Works Department brings such a compelling story to the Fringe Festival for it’s premiere performance in Toronto.  Rabbit Hole is sure to please, touch and arouse its audiences.
