The Paperbag Queen

From the press release: Always wanted to visit real Royalty? Well, here is your chance: the tale of a liberating queen in a liberating country in an interactive operetta in a ten movement play at the Toronto Fringe this year.

Jacquie Van de Geer has performed, directed and created shows in Europe and Montreal. Montreal’s The Rover said that for “fans of offbeat and wacky interactive theatre,” this show is sure to please. This one-woman show by Van de Geer is about a woman who is queen of her own country where fear of the unknown does not exist. This play seems charming, intimate and sweet.

This piece plays at Theatre Passe Muraille Backstage, 16 Ryerson Ave. Performances: July 7, 6:00pm; July 9, 1:30pm; July 10, 8:00pm; July 11, 7.30 pm; July 13, 8.15 pm; July 14, 1.00 pm; July 15, 8.45 pm; July 16, 4.30 pm

Bursting Into Flames

From the press release: Brooklyn’s Martin Dockery returns to the Toronto International Fringe Festival with a brand new monologue about one man’s frighteningly funny journey through Heaven.

Dockery has received numerous international Fringe awards, and his stop at the Toronto Fringe is part of a six-month tour across North America. He has a lot of Fringe and experience and many of his plays have received “5 stars”, so this play looks very promising. Looks like Dockery has the magic touch of being a master storyteller.

This piece plays at Robert Gill Theatre, 214 College St., 3rd floor. Performances: July 7, 6:30pm; July 9, 2:15pm; July 10, 7:30pm; July 11, 5:15pm; July 13, 9:30pm; July 14, noon; July 15, 11:30pm

Horse

From the press release: The play tells the story of Cassie, a Toronto street kid in crisis. She witnessed something terrifying but can’t remember what. As fragments of her memory play out violently around her, Cassie works with a psychiatrist at CAMH to solve the mystery.

Ned Dickens is a Dora Award-winning playwright. The play material really appeals to me because it deals with some of the city’s darkest issues, and is based on his real-life experience working with street kids. One interesting aspect of this world premiere is that it is site-specific: it takes place in an alleyway beside a restaurant.

This piece plays in the alleyway beside The Last Temptation Restaurant and Bar, 12 Kensington Ave. Performances: July 6 – 11 & 13 – 17; all shows at 7pm.

Mary’s Wedding

From the press release: Romance begins when Mary’s family settles in a small farming village in Canada after emigrating from England. Mary (Blythe Haynes) falls for Charlie (Jesse Nerenberg), a farm boy who does not meet with the approval of her mother. When the excitement of their forbidden romance is interrupted by the Great War, the true story of a fabled Canadian WW1 squadron begins as Charlie befriends Canadian war hero Gordon Flowerdew.

I can picture myself watching this romantic drama with my mom or one of my gal pals. I might even be able to drag my boyfriend to this. I have a soft spot for small-town Canadian-set pieces. Massicotte has received many playwriting awards, including the 2011 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award.

This piece plays at the Factory Theatre Mainstage, 125 Bathurst St. Performances: July 7, 8:15PM; July 9, 5:15PM; July 10, 4:45PM; July 11, 2:45PM; July 12, 10:30PM; July 14, 12:00PM; July 16, 7:30PM

A Depper Kind of Love

From the press release: Kat is your typical girl in a world inspired by 1980s Madonna and she has a whole lotta love for Depp. In just an hour Kat takes her audiences on a swirling multimedia extravaganza of love, tears and guffaws.

Fun, spunky and funky, anyone who has ever had a celebrity or fantasy crush would probably love to see this. Kat loves Johnny Depp so much she even has an online petition to get him to come to the Fringe Festival! This is a musical love story that is sure to get some good laughs, especially if you’re a Depp-head.

This piece plays at the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse,79A St. George Street. Performances: July 7, 8:45pm; July 9, 3:30pm; July 11, 9:00pm; July 13, 5:45pm; July 15, 11:00pm; July 16, 5:15pm; July 17, 12:00pm

When Harry Met Harry

From the press release: Set in an office environment, Harry is dedicated to finding perfection in work-related tasks. With an aversion to change, his pointedly straight life is overturned when forced to attend an inter-personal skills development workshop.

Australian Allan Girod plays the title role and has been generating a lot of Fringe buzz. It also won ‘Best of Fest’ at Ottawa Fringe 2011. This play relies on physical comedy, intimate stories and funny self-reflection. Many people would probably relate the show’s premise to their own office jobs and search for perfection.

This piece plays at Tarragon Extra Space, 30 Bridgman. Performances: July 7, 9:15 PM; July 10, 1:15 PM; July 12, 7:00 PM; July 13 2:15 PM; July 14, 5:15 PM; July 15, 9:15 PM; July 16, Noon

Mister Baxter

From the press release: The play is based on an actual event from the fall of 2009 on the Bloor TTC line at High Park Station. Fenton created three subplots to build the harrowing story of sex, trauma and abuse in which she explores an encounter between a man and a boy, a teenage couple and a crumbling marriage.

I’ve been taking the TTC for many years now, so this play being taken from the scenes of the subway resonates with me. These 3 chance encounters intertwining remind me a little bit of Crash or Paris, Je T’aime. And who knows? You may have witnessed these actual events yourself on the transit line.

This piece plays at Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace, 16 Ryerson Ave. Performances: July 7, 10:30pm; July 9, 11:30pm; July 10, 2:15pm; July 13, 7:45pm; July 14, 3:30pm; July 16, 7:00pm; July 17, 1:00pm
