Grounded in Fantasy

From press release: What does a woman need to survive? A good man, a good job, or a good f—k? Accidental Crossroads is proud to announce the world premiere and its inaugural production of Grounded in Fantasy, by P.J. Elwood, as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival.

Live , original music pulses through this sexy, new, dark comedy about a depressed woman whose fantasy world takes over her reality when she hits rock bottom. Characters from the woman’s mind perform short fantasies in an effort to unlock the reason behind her mental illness. Based on a series of short vignettes inspired by some of the writer’s favourite music, Grounded in Fantasy was written in an attempt to show a unique perspective on a very real condition that affects most -if not all- people at some point in their lives.

The piece plays at The Tarragon Theatre Main Space, 30 Bridgman Avenue.  Performances: July 7th @ 10:30pm, July 9th @ 3:30pm, July 10th @ 8:15 pm, July 11th @ 6:15pm, July 12 @ 8:45pm, July 15 @ 11:00pm, July 16 @2:15pm

Hypnogogic Logic

From the press release: WAKE UP! Montreal’s premiere comedy troupe and longtime Toronto Fringe favourites Uncalled For hijack your subconscious with their award-winning creation Uncalled For Presents: Hypnogogic Logic – a smart, hilarious, furiously energetic ride through the world of dreams. The show runs from July 8th to the 15th at the Bathurst Street Theatre.

The company’s 5th scripted show, Hypnogogic Logic won Uncalled For their second Just For Laughs Award for the best comedy at the Montreal Fringe. The show is a clever, charming and tightly constructed exploration of the hypnogogic – the hallucinatory state between waking and sleeping. In Uncalled For’s collective hive mind, this means an absurd and inspired dreamscape, filled with dictionary preachers, post-apocalyptic cooking shows, ticklish piano teachers and a reincarnated Freddie Mercury.
Uncalled For is an improv and sketch comedy troupe who have been performing together for over ten years. Fringe Fest mainstays in both Montreal and Toronto, they have won the Montreal festival’s Best Text Award once and the Just For Laughs Best Comedy Award twice. They have also received the Second City Best Of The Fest Award at the Toronto Sketchfest, and have been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Comedic Play. In July 2011 they will be launching a series of web videos on their new site, WeAreUncalledFor.com.

The piece plays at The Bathurst Street Theatre, 736 Bathurst St.  Performances: July 8 @ 8:45 PM, July 9 @ 1:45 PM, July 10 @ 10:30, July 11 @ 6:30 PM, July 12 @ 3:15 PM, July 14 @ 7:30 PM, July 15 @ 3:30 PM.

Let’s play House

From the press release:  “Let’s Play House” tests and showcases the power of art.Jonathon and Carlynn believedthat with artistic thinking, anyone can live a rich life, regardless of constraints. Then Alzheimer’s and mysterious pain struck their families. Sleepless nights and fruitless doctor visits depleted their energy. Frustration bordering on rage slowly snaked its way into their homes, until it seemed only a matter of time before rage would erupt into violence. When they’ve done everything right, but still everything is wrong, what can they do? Explaining their “artistic thinking” was not enough. Badgering made it worse. Just when it seemed art had failed, they decided to submit themselves to the test: to create theatre with their families about their families. In the process, all the characters changed.

“Among the bravest stage projects I’ve seen.…
This is life at its most naked…. the actors escape gravity.”
–Michael Evans, SEE Magazine

“It’s heavy subject matter, but they keep it light and entertaining
while delivering a powerful message.” -Phil Dupperon, VUE Weekly
