The Man On My Face (Do These Pants Make Me Look Fat? Productions) 2011 Toronto Fringe Review

The Man On My Face is playing at 976 Hair Salon during Fringe. It’s a comedy about a “man child” who thinks he can become macho with a haircut and new moustache.

The creative team had a mission to develop a piece that embodies everything that is great about the Fringe. That sounds like a tall order, like they were setting themselves up for failure.

Fortunately they failed at failing. I loved everything about this play.

For starters, both actors, Neil Cameron & Torquil Colbo are superb. They make their characters believable and hilarious. They come across as cartoon characters, and I certainly mean that in a good way. They are larger than life. They are colorful and the type we have the pleasure of meeting way too infrequently in real life.

There is a fantastic song that will have you smiling so wide your mouth will hurt. The Patron Saint of Masculinity can hold his own against James Brown or Mick Jagger!

Directors Patrice Goodman & Nicole Stamp have done a great job. Effects are low tech but incredibly effective. You might never look at a service bell again without laughing!

I definitely encourage you to see The Man On My Face. I also encourage you to buy tickets ahead of time, as the salon only seats 18 patrons.

Hats also go off to the volunteers working outside the salon. They were super friendly and helpful, embodying more great Fringe qualities.

This 45 minute play made me completely forget about taxes, politicians, pollution and shwarmas without enough garlic. If I’m in a great mood for the next while, blame The Man On My Face!

  1. The Toronto Fringe only presells half the available seats to a performance – the remaining tickets are sold at the venue

  2. Hey Leslie,

It’s a good point, but that still means there are only 9 tickets up for grabs at the door for each performance. So really, I’d be getting my tickets ahead of time.

  3. Limited presale tickets are mostly sold out for performances from July 14-July 17 at fringetoronto.ca

Limited tickets quantities – approx 9 – are available at the door one hour prior to showtime.

    Venue seats 18 only.

Get there early to avoid missing your chance to see the show.
