A Depper Kind of Love (Kat & the MP3) 2011 Toronto Fringe Review

A Depper Kind of Love is a show about a girl who is obsessed with Johnny Depp and is currently petitioning to have him attend one of her performances at the Toronto Fringe. The whole point of the show is to make Mr. Depp realize that she is his one true love, which will hopefully cause him to leave his wife and get on the first flight to Toronto.

Kat Leonard plays this love-crazed girl and takes us on a journey through her fantasies, filled with songs and dances to lure in her one true soul-mate. The entire show has a 1980’s pop song vibe to it which I felt was perfect for the show.

The first song is hilarious! Kat sings about wanting to be Johnny Depp’s jockstrap or even his backpack. This is a quirky, comedic piece that almost any girl can relate to. We’ve all had our share of crushes, celebrity or otherwise, and it’s amusing to watch someone live out those personal thoughts.

The set is quite simple but there is a large screen to the right which plays different videos throughout the show.  There are clips  from various Johnny Depp movies that Kat has added herself to making for pretty funny conversations. There are a lot of multi-media elements that add to the overall mood of the show.

The one thing I liked was that Kat was not afraid to make fun of herself and seemed like a real person, slightly crazier than most people, but real nonetheless. And the show did have a message about loving yourself for who you are.

If you’re looking for something light and entertaining you might enjoy this show.
