Don Quixote (make.art.theatre.) 2011 Toronto Fringe Review

I was really looking forward to seeing this play based on the adventures Don Quixote, but sadly it left me unimpressed. If there’s one word I can use to describe this production, it would have to be “loud”.

I felt like the acting for the most part was overexaggerated and the voices – I know that this is usually a good thing in theatre – were deafening.

However, to be fair, there were some parts that drew chuckles and even laughter from the audience. The actor who played Sampson and several other characters was wonderful. He played each role so believably and provided much needed comic relief to the piece.

This production of Don Quixote is billed as a comedy but don’t expect any uproarious laughter.

One of the actors fumbled his lines so many times that I started to get a little annoyed. I understand that it happens from time to time, but in my opinion, it’s a little late in the run for that.

One highlight was that their only prop, a wheelbarrow, was used ingeniously; as a bed, a door, a storage rack for their weapons and even a dining table.

I don’t mean to be too critical but I’ve seem some terrific shows this Fringe and this one just didn’t live up to my expectations.
