Looking for an hour of pure fun? Pure don’t-think-about-anything-deep-just-smile fun? Then go see Tiki Bikini Beach Paradise Party-A-Go-Go at the Next Stage Festival on now until January 15, 2012.
You can expect singing, dancing, corny jokes, scantily clad men and women and eyerolling (I mean that in a good way) sexual innuendo. If you’ve ever seen Beach Party (or any of the 1960s Beach Party movies) then just imagine that, only live, and more fun.
The songs are great fun, and accompanied by a live band. In fact, my only complaint about the piece is that I found it hard to hear the singers over the band. I was only in the third row, so I would worry that even more would be lost further back. That said, I’m sure putting microphones on a bunch of folks in bikinis and tight swim trunks would be a bit of a technical challenge, so I can understand why there weren’t any.
The show is a delightful romp. As long as you aren’t going in expecting anything enlightening or thought-provoking, I think you’ll have a good time. It’s definitely worth checking out.

You have to be kidding me. In a festival that pupports to be mounting the best Canadian theatre this is selected. It’s just an embarassment to a curated festival- I’m mean surely someone would’ve gone to see it at last years Fringe and think, “You know what, this shouldn’t be one of only 10 shows to be in this festival.” I’m stunned.
Look, I’m not into bashing theatre or other artists, I’m more upset with this actually being selected, especially since I know dozens of other folks who were rejected.
The cast do their best with bad material and poor direction. It’s really just a one-note piece, I have no idea how someone can think this is good. I was there with three other people who disliked it more than I did.
And just a note here for the cast- when a lighting gel falls out above you and lands centre stage, don’t ignore it, especially when it gets stuck to on of the actors feet and he tries to shuffle away as though it’s not there. Hilarious for us, but really amateurish…
Sorry if this all seems a little bit harsh, but I think the worst thing you can do is to praise bad theatre, then that’s all we’ll end up with. As the review written here basically says if you like mindless fun then this is for you…
