Then He Wakes Up – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From Press Release

Henry’s life is absurd. He wakes, he waits, he works. Felix is here to change that.

Every day the same dream. On a day like every other Henry shows up for his bus so he can get to work on time. On this day waits the mysterious Felix, standing perfectly still, anticipating Henry’s arrival. Little does Henry know that Felix is here to change his life. At least that’s what Felix wants. With the arrival of other absurd
characters including Henry’s schoolyard crush and his scolding, anecdotal father, Felix finds himself racing to break Henry out of his monotonous cycle and get him to live his life, before he wakes up and has to do the whole thing over again.

Written in an absurdist style reminiscent of Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story, Then He Wakes Up is a funny and truthful look at how people live their lives bored, sad and angry but yet do nothing to take control and fix things.

The idea of Then He Wakes Up was spawned by actor/ playwright Matthew Sarookanian. The thought of sleepwalking through life and going to work every day to a job he hates – until he dies, terrifies him. The only solution of course is to stage something to remind him and everyone else that your job does not control your life: you control your life. You can change the dream.

Then He Wakes Up is directed by Joanne Williams who directed a very successful comedy for last year’s Toronto Fringe called Finally: An Epic Cycle, which was written by Sarah Cody. This year Sarah is the
dramaturge for the new work, Then He Wakes Up. The cast is comprised of talented actors including Jordan Mechano (Tallulah’s Cabaret’s The Boys in the Band), Matthew Sarookanian (Fly by Night Theatre’s Mr.
Marmalade) and Alex Sims (The Barstool players’ Theatre of the Film Noir). It will be stage managed by Heather Bellingham (Nightwood Theatre’s The Lawyer Show – Much Ado About Nothing) .

This is a show definitely worth checking out at the Toronto Fringe. Then He Wakes Up will make you laugh, and maybe even break you out of your routine.
