Headshots and Healing Potions – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

Monkeyman Productions and the Toronto Fringe Festival proudly present

HEADSHOTS AND HEALING POTIONS

Toronto’s geekiest theatre company has got game, and they’re gonna prove it at the Fringe Festival! As a part of the Fringe’s new AlleyPlays program, Monkeyman Productions is bringing a show to perhaps the smallest possible venue – an 8’ by 8’ shed – to present a series of short plays exploring the lives of video game fanatics. From arcade to console to MMORPG, from Zork to Mass Effect 3, we’ll explore a wide range of gamer culture in a space so intimate, it’ll be like you’re watching over our shoulders as we shoot for a new high score.

Headshots and Healing Potions is written by D.J. Sylvis and Manda Whitney, directed by Martin Chodorek, and stage managed by Lisa Sciannella. Manda Whitney is also acting in the show, along with Adam Cresswell and Jeffrey Henderson. This will be Monkeyman’s first appearance at the Fringe, and their tenth show as a company.

Since 2008, Monkeyman Productions has created postmodern theatre with real relevancy to a culture informed by comic books, monster movies, and video games. We speak in the language of an audience that has most truly found its voice in the meme-ridden YouTube-obsessed depths of the Internet. We draw from popular culture in the way that Shakespeare drew from the common culture of his day – these are our mythologies, our tales of comedy and tragedy.

Through the development and performance of work which examines our obsessions and preoccupations in the 21st Century, we hope to discover the ways in which we truly have changed, for better or worse, and the ways in which we remain the same – with a definite eye toward the absurd, but also a corresponding empathy for a subject matter that, in the end, encompasses all of us.
