Stamped: A Story About Daniel, who Happens to have Autism – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From Press Release

STAMPED BRINGS A FULL CAST OF COLORFUL CHARACTERS ALL FOLDED UP INTO ONE TINY LITTLE ACTRESS TO FRINGE

“This show is terrific – funny, poignant, original.”
Alice Eve Cohen; playwright, solo theatre artist, and memoirist. Writer of WHAT I THOUGHT I KNEW one of Oprah Magazine’s 25 Best Books of Summer, and Salon’s Best Books of the Year.

Stamped is a solo show based on a true story about a boy with Autism and his attention-hungry sister.  Supported by a cast of crazy characters, all played by Sarah Magni, Stamped is about how others label us and how we define ourselves.

Sarah Magni is a Canadian actor who has performed both in Toronto and in New York City. This is the first solo piece Sarah has written and performed in and it has a message she stands behind. Sarah is an activist for people with Autism and wrote this piece in order to help give Autism a voice.

In order to write this semi-biographical piece based on her own brother, who has Autism, Sarah interviewed her brother. In this show she actually includes these interview sessions in which she plays both Daniel being interviewed and his sister interviewing him.

This piece is done as a solo show because we are all targets of being Stamped and labelled, whether by ourselves or those around us. Even though Sarah is only one human being she can connect to many others simply because human existence is a common experience.

Stamped is a ground breaking piece that will leave people thinking, not just about Autism, but about themselves and their relation to the things that define them as humans. Above all else this is a coming of age tale. It is not simply about Autism, it is about Daniel, who happens to have Autism.
