The Super Secret Subway Society – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From Press Release

The Super Secret Subway Society premieres at FringeKids!

(TORONTO, ON – MAY 28, 2012) The Super Secret Subway Society is the inaugural production of NachoMama Theatre for Young Audiences, a new children’s theatre group headed by Katherine Sanders. This fantastical play set on the Toronto subway system is appropriate for ages five and up. The play is inspired by the FringeKids! venue, the
Palmerston Library Theatre, which is located directly above the Bloor subway line. Trains can be heard running underneath the audience’s feet several times a show. This site-specific soundscape, when combined with the political backdrop of the raging Toronto transportation debate, makes The Super Secret Subway Society the most topical piece of kids theatre you’re likely to see at the Fringe this year.

10 year-old Seymour is used to riding the subway by himself, in fact he’s invented a whole imaginary game about it, using subway station names for characters and magical objects. He’s right in the middle of an important quest, when he is suddenly and inconceivably befriended by Amy Anderson, the coolest girl in school. And Seymour has to decide whether to let her in on his secret game. The Super Secret Subway Society is a play about bringing imagination and creativity into everyday life, and about letting other people into your world.

The Super Secret Subway Society is written and directed by Katherine Sanders, in collaboration with the ensemble. Katherine Sanders last appeared at the Toronto Fringe in Monster Theatre’s hit show, Jesus Christ: The Lost Years, which won Best of Venue in 2006 and went on to a sold-out run at the Next Stage Festival in 2008. Katherine is also the programmer and producer of HarbourKIDS at Harbourfront Centre. Freddie Rivas last appeared at the Toronto Fringe in Winston Spear’s dance show Toys. He co-founded the sketch troupe Frenzy, which has performed in Montreal, Winnipeg, New York City and Toronto. Rivas also hosts Rap Battlez every month at Comedy Bar. Kevin Dowse has recently been seen in Henri Faberge’s Feint of Hart and Heligoland Follies at Hart House. Dowse is also part of the sketch troupe Frenzy, and appears in Rap Battlez with castmate Rivas. Kaitlin Winslow, script consultant, is a Toronto-based drama therapist and developmental dramatist. She has a BFA in Theatre for Youth and an MA in in Drama Therapy from Concordia University. Brittney Filek-Gibson is a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and works in arts education.
