The Shape of Things – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From Press Release

Finishing off Theatre Bassaris’ successful third season, after the sold out run of Neil Labute’s Reasons to be Pretty, and several successful co- productions, including 2011 Toronto Fringe “Best of Venue” winner Saved, Bassaris will be presenting Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things as part of the Toronto International Fringe Festival 2012.

The Shape of Things is the first installment in a trilogy of plays by LaBute that address the idea of beauty and art. When Adam (Christian Smith), a geeky English Literature major meets Evelyn (Jen Neales), an intriguing graduate art student, at the local museum his life takes an unexpected turn. The Shape of Things examines the emotional and physical consequences of both the artistic process and self improvement. The production investigates moral and ethical grey areas a young artist and those close to her are forced to encounter on the path to authenticity.

Director Alex Fields is a recent graduate of York’s Creative Ensemble program in devised theatre. He doesn’t shy away from the difficult questions as he brings his talented cast on a personal journey they, as young artists, can relate to. The cast bring a powerful and dynamic range of character to the stage and features the talents of Christian Smith, Jen Neales, Adrianna Prosser, and Brendan O’Reilly.

Theatre Bassaris is an independent company of young theatre artists based in Toronto. The company fosters emerging actors and directors in an environment that promotes creative expression, artistic risk, and the communal learning experience of all involved artists. Previous productions include Reasons to be Pretty by Neil LaBute Closer by Patrick Marber, No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, Early Retirement by Laurel Brady (co-produced with Girls & Bicycles) and 2011 Toronto Fringe “Best of Venue” winner Saved by Edward Bond (co-produced with Theatre Eos).

Theatre Bassaris is thrilled to once again be partnering up with two other independent Toronto  theatre companies. While continuing to expand their network of emerging artists, this production of The Shape of Things will surely adhere to the Bassaris tradition of putting on quality, immediate theatre.
