Camp Schecky: A play on a bus!
Fringe production takes audience on hilarious nostalgic ride to summer camp

Grab a seat on the big yellow school bus where the quirky staff of Camp Schecky awaits. As the bus drives through the streets of Toronto, you become the camper and the drama of the camp staff unfolds. Camp Schecky, a Sassy Roo production, premiers on July 4th, 2012 as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival.

“When else can you see a play on a bus?” says Nicki Gallo, creator of Camp Schecky. “It gives the audience a chance to relive the experience of heading to camp – or to experience it for the first time!” Gallo hopes audiences will feel the nostalgia of childhood summers as they ‘get their camp on.’

Teaming up with the Second City Training Center, the story of Camp Schecky was developed collaboratively by the entire ensemble through character work and improvisation. The ensemble benefits from having first hand camp experiences, which makes Camp Schecky ring true to nostalgic summer evenings; in transit from the beach, or headed back to camp after that first canoe trip.

Brain child of Nicki Gallo, a student at Second City and Fringe Festival alumni, Nicki starred in Swoon! Winner of NOW Magazine’s 2011 Fringe Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble and Patron’s Pick. Camp Schecky is directed by Rob Norman, a faculty member at the Second City Training Center. He is a multiple Canadian Comedy award nominee, and a founding member of the troupe MAYBE which the Toronto Star heralded as “the next generation of great Canadian sketch comedy.”

The Camp Schecky cast consists of Allison Brennan, a theatre and film actor whose credits include performances at the American Conservatory Theatre; the California Shakespeare Company and film and television actor Troy Blundell who recently portrayed Brian “Killer” Kilrea in the CBC miniseries “The Don Cherry Story II: The Wrath of Grapes” alongside Jarred Keeso and Steven McHatt; Steve Boleantu, part of the sketch comedy troupe Frenzy which has performed at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater NY, Second City Toronto, and the Just for Laughs
Showcase.

The Camp Schecky bus will be stationed at the Fringe tent, boarding the audience behind Honest Ed’s parking lot. Camp Schecky runs from July 4th, through July 15th, 2012. For more information and show times, visit sassyroo.ca/campschecky.
