I Became My Mother (Triennacom Entertainment) 2012 Toronto Fringe Review

At this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival, the one-man comedy show, I Became My Mother,  charmingly blends music, media and storytelling in a fast paced evening of theatre. Produced by Triennacom Entertainment, written, directed and performed by Cleve Jones himself, the show is a personal and humorous reflection on Jones’ journey into fatherhood.

Staged in the St. Vladimir Theatre, Jones opens with a brief commentary of how he “became his mother”. Transitioning from stand up comedy, to video clips on the screen, to sharing songs on his electric guitar, Jones is relaxed, amusing and personable.

From strollers going out of control, field trips to Pioneer Village, and hockey recollections, Cleve Jones wittingly brings us back to our own childhood reminding us of how it shapes our future.

The on-screen anecdotes from various people in Jones’ life were quite engaging. Cameos from his wife and friend added a comedic element to the overall piece and were interestingly integrated.

Most memorable was Jones’ story about the trials and tribulations of late night babysitting. Jones shares with us some illuminating ways on how to get children to fall asleep!

A rock star at heart, songs of love and woe interspersed throughout the performance bringing yet another component to the show.

A sure crowd pleaser, I Became My Mother is an original and unique piece of comedy. Fresh and candid, the talented Cleve Jones bravely dives into the world of stand-up comedy.
