Bras. Over the shoulder boulder holders. Call them what you will, love them or hate them, if you’re a woman, they are a part of your life – whether that are to fondly display your girls or to keep them at bay. That Boob Show, appropriately set in the site-specific Secrets From Your Sister bra fitting boutique, is a one-woman’s intimate story of personal sexiness, the ongoing size debate and the ability to appreciate what Mama Nature gave you.

I’ll admit to being a little biased as to why I selected this show in particular to review. First off, I worked in a lingerie shop for over a year and have measured countless women to fit them for their perfect bra during that time. When I say I’ve heard all the stories, I’m not kidding. Secondly, I own a rather significant bust, F-cup even, and can easily relate to the highs and lows that the star Mandy MacLean experiences.

Witnessing Mandy’s monologue is both refreshing and familiar. To have voice given to that comparative feeling most women feel when standing next to someone who’s built so much prettier and sexier than we feel we are…especially when you’re the one that has to measure Ms. Barbie for a new bra…it’s inspiring to know we’re not alone. To have that loving significant other who goes out of his way to give you lingerie for your birthday but makes the grievous faux pas to have picked up the wrong size (a small?? Really?!) is a definite “been there!” laugh.

The monologue is interestingly accented with the percussive soundtrack of musician Pooria Fard who adds an effective layer to the experience of the production.

Mandy’s delivery is a delight to watch – growing from childlike and innocent when she describes her earlier yet still large chested years to the frustration and anger that comes from years of teasing and verbal abuse from countless sources. Capped off with her forlorn and wistful voice singing One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” to herself.

Bear in mind that the production is staged on the floors of a store rather than a theatre so seating is severely limited. Show up early if you’re hoping for a seat or you’ll end up sitting on the floor like I was which can get uncomfortable after a period of time.

For a delightful and insightful one woman show in a rather unique setting, That Boob Show is worth checking out on your Fringe foray, for women and men alike.
