Charlie’s Having a Baby

From press release: Two down-on-their-luck friends invent a harebrained scheme to swindle money from their Nana – which includes a pregnancy and overnight make-over! But their plan quickly snowballs into a hilarious web of lies and deceit as they try desperately to prove that CHARLIE’S HAVING A BABY.

CHARLIE’S HAVING A BABY features performances by Patricia McPherson (Degrassi – The Next Generation, Flashpoint, Dan for Mayor) and newcomer Ruth Goodwin (Cellar Hotel, Chicken Coop Theatre/Fringe 2011). CHARLIE’S HAVING A BABY is written and directed by Promise Productions’ Artistic Director Deon Denton (Pieces of Me), who also plays Nana.

This piece plays at The Annex Theatre. Performances: July 13 6:15 PM, July 14 12:30 PM, July 15 3:30 PM

The No Bull$#!% History of Canada

From press release: Kyle Allatt believes not only is the truth stranger than fiction, but also that truth is funnier and more interesting. As a child he was required to make his family tree as a class project. He somewhat misunderstood the scope of said project and in the course of his research (which now reached back into the 15th Century) he discovered he was related to Charles Tupper, a former Prime Minister. 20 years later, Allatt decided to look his prestigious relative up and what he discovered was fascinating. Tupper was not only Canada’s shortest termed PM at only 69 days, but also by far, Canada’s WORST, or at the very least, funniest, Prime Minister.

Kyle Allatt has been actor for the past 25 years. He had spent 4 years writing and performing with the Montreal sketch comedy troupe “The Dancing Cock Brothers” (2006-2010), co-hosts 2 Montreal podcasts “The Gung Horse Podcast” and “Rock Over London, Rock on Chicago” and has been featured in many commercials, television shows and films over the years (including bit parts in “Secret Window” (2004) opposite Johnny Depp and “Source Code” (2011) with Jake Gyllenhaal).

This piece plays at the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace. Performances: July 12 6:15 PM, July 13 5:15 PM, July 14 1:00 PM

Camp Shecky

From press release: Grab a seat on the big yellow school bus where the quirky staff ofCamp Schecky awaits. As the bus drives through the streets of Toronto, you become the camper and the drama of the camp staff unfolds. Teaming up with the Second City Training Center, the story of Camp Schecky was developed collaboratively by the entire ensemble through character work and improvisation. The ensemble benefits from having first hand camp experiences, which makes Camp Schecky ring true to nostalgic summer evenings; in transit from the beach, or headed back to camp after that first canoe trip.

The Camp Schecky cast consists of Allison Brennan, a theatre and film actor whose credits include performances at the American Conservatory Theatre; the California Shakespeare Company and film and television actor Troy Blundell who recently portrayed Brian “Killer” Kilrea in the CBC miniseries “The Don Cherry Story II: The Wrath of Grapes” alongside Jarred Keeso and Steven McHatt; Steve Boleantu, part of the sketch comedy troupe Frenzy which has performed at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater NY, Second City Toronto, and the Just for Laughs Showcase.

This piece plays at the Honest Ed’s Parking Lot.  Performances: July 12 7:30 PM, July 13 10:00 PM, July 14 2:00 PM, July 14 3:00 PM, July 15 2:00 PM, July 15 3:00 PM

Linda & Jason

From press release: Linda, 26 moves into her dead Grandmother’s house to clean up before selling it. Realizing she’s still where she was a decade ago she starts dating Jason, 17. This play tackles not being where you think you should be and realizing the garbage in your life isn’t junk and maybe’s more valuable than you think. It’s a romantic comedy about two people growing up together.

Coffeehouse Theatre is an emerging-artist founded company originally from Montreal. Their previous works include; “The Underpants” by Steve Martin – A Play in 72 Hours, “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde & “We Can Change Your Bandages” By Adam Hunter Collier – presented at the 2012 Canstage Festival of Ideas & Creation.

This piece plays at the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace.  Performances: July 12 8:00 PM, July 14 2:45 PM, July 15 5:45 PM

Honour Killings

From press release: A modern tragedy about family violence and a displaced sense of home, HONOUR KILLINGS is a play with immediate socio-political and culturally relevant content. Four women are drowned after bringing “dishonour” to their family in this tale of people caught between cultures and a household taught that “family is priority”.

Playwright Harvey Markowitz, winner of a CBC-TV script contest, “Mara Ad Mara”, and our Rewriter, Caroline Azar, lead singer of “She Said Boom: Fifth Column” 2012 Hot Docs – “NNNN” from NOW, worked with director Stevie Jay, to craft this play into being a slice of tragic reality. The actors joining that journey include Supinder Wraich (a supporting lead in “Textuality” opposite Jason Lewis (“Sex in The City), and Eric McCormick of “Will and Grace”), Reza Sholeh (lead “Lost Journey” North American theatrical release April 2011), and Lise Cormier of CBC Radio’s award-winning “Backbencher”.

This piece plays at the The Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse. Performances: July 14 8:45 PM, July 15 1:45 PM
