COMPELLING MEDICAL HISTORY COMES TO THE FRINGE
IN “A YOUNG LADY’S GUIDE TO VIVISECTION”
Vivisection: (from Latin vivus, “alive” and sectio, “cutting”). Grave-robbing! Cat dissections! Petticoats! Based on a bizarrely true story, this gruesome dramedy follows the Queen’s University medical class of 1884 as they adjust to the first lady students, new scientific ideas, and the marvelously mad world of Victorian medicine.
A Young Lady’s Guide to Vivisection is an edgy, thought-provoking link to the past, devised by emerging artists. We developed the show through an intensive research and devising process, searching through hospital records and 100-year-old journal entries. Our young and talented cast and crew are well equipped to deal with scholarly subjects – they are Queen’s and Brock University recent graduates and students.
The show examines the very Victorian notion of “progress”, both in the operating room and society, balancing comedy and drama with a healthy dose of historical fun!
