Monologist Andrew Bailey brings THE ADVERSARY to the 2013 Toronto Fringe.
How is justice brought to the street people, addicts and prostitutes who don’t call the police?
Andrew Bailey, comedian and nebbish, faced questions like this every day he was caretaker of an inner city church. He answers them in his latest monologue, The Adversary, part of the 2013 Toronto Fringe.

Andrew attempts to bring fairness so that, no matter what their conflicts, people will treat each other with dignity and respect. Fred—a street person Andrew befriends—advocates “street justice”, which employs violence and retribution. These two viewpoints come to a head when Jamie, a dangerous sociopath, stalks Andrew at the church. The police are slow to respond. Fred isn’t.

Despite its serious subject matter, The Adversary is also funny and warm hearted. Dramaturges Britt Small and Jacob Richmond are no strangers to mixing comedy with dark subject matter. Their hit musical Ride the Cyclone has won numerous awards, including the 2012 Dora for “Outstanding Touring Production” and their hit play Legoland was recently nominated for the 2013 Touring Production Dora. Andrew has been called “a tremendous comic writer” (The Georgia Straight), comparable to Woody Allen (Mooney on Theatre, See Magazine). The Adversary is dark comedy at its lightest.

The Adversary premiered at the 2012 Victoria Uno Festival, where it completely sold out its run and is part of Andrew Bailey’s six-city fringe tour this summer.
