“[A] darker tone and feel than Mort, but the wit and satire that are Pratchett’s trademarks are still there!”

From press release:

Socratic Theatre Collective is proud to conclude its third season with a sitespecific production of Terry Pratchett’s Monstrous Regiment, adapted by Stephen Briggs, presented at the Toronto Fringe Festival.
Terry Pratchett’s Monstrous Regiment is the stage adaptation of the thirty-first novel in Pratchett’s award-winning Discworld series. It tells the story of Polly Perks, a Borogravian barmaid who disguises herself as a boy to join the army in search of her lost brother, and the band of misfits who make up her regiment.

As part of the site-specific program at the Toronto Fringe, the production will take place at Pauper’s Pub. This historic setting, complete with pre- and post- show bar service, will define the world of Monstrous Regiment; according to director Liz Bragg, “the audience starts in a familiar, social space, in which they can believe they would be served by a girl like Polly, or overhear a sergeant telling stories of the war. As the story continues, the audience is immersed in the world of the show as the action takes place all around them.”

Terry Pratchett’s Monstrous Regiment is the second Pratchett play to be produced by Socratic Theatre Collective; last year’s Terry Pratchett’s Mort, also at the Toronto Fringe, was enthusiastically received by audiences, and sold out most of its run. Bragg says, “We’re huge Pratchett fans at Socratic Theatre Collective, and are absolutely delighted to explore a new corner of the Discworld. Monstrous Regiment definitely has a darker tone and feel than Mort, but the wit and satire that are Pratchett’s trademarks are still there!”
