HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO RUN AWAY FROM THE CIRCUS?

Montreal-New York-Toronto

She’s shameless. She’s wildly entertaining. She’s obnoxious…She got in your face. She filled the room with her (many) voices. She performed seemingly painful poses inches away from you. It was awesome.” (Leacocks,January 2013)

What does it mean to “grow up” clown? Emerging comedian Rachel Resnik’s In Denial: A One Woman Show (presented by Bum Chic Productions) explores what it means to be a female clown born to clown parents who wants to be just about anything other than a clown-AKA: the best best singer-ballerina-superhero-actress-fisherman she can be!

Directed by Julie Santini, In Denial will run at the Toronto Fringe Festival from July 3rd-13th at the Tarragon Extraspace after a sold out run at Montreal’s TNC Theatre, as well as a performance at Toronto’s Unit 102 Theatre. Excerpts of In Denial have also been seen at Theatre Passe Murraile’s Crapshoot as well as at the NY Downtown Clown Revue in New York City.

Resnik plays Velma Patterson, a “downright absurd yet completely loveable young clown” who will also appear this summer in the Toronto Festival of Clowns Red Nose District show hosted by beloved clown duo Morro and Jasp. Velma dreams of becoming a Broadway superstar who is as gorgeous and skinny as pregnant Angelina Jolie, but has a serious problem with her clown roots. Sick of “clownists” Velma just wants a fair shot at an acting career-but does she have to run away from her own identity to do it?

Tickets for In Denial can be purchased through the Fringe Festival Box Office online 24 hours a day (http://fringetoronto.com/fringe-festival/shows/in-denial-a-one-woman-clown-show), by phone (416 966-1062) as well as in person at the The Fringe Club (581 Bloor Street West) for $12.00. Tickets can also be purchased for $12.00 at the door.
