Toronto, ON – Nourishment is an intergenerational exploration of female relationships, how we pass down traditions from one generation to the next, as well as societal and cultural definitions of womanhood. Inspired by the many ways and places women have gathered to discuss politics, share stories, and nourish one another throughout history, we dedicate this play to the strong women we know and love – our heroes of today, yesterday, and every day.

Nourishment weaves together feminist history with the complex lives of a family of four very different women. Using a medley of stylized choreography, soundscapes, and theatricalized audio description, Nourishment is made accessible to visual and hearing impaired audiences. Incorporating creative methods that resonate with and reach a more diverse audience is a necessary and important part of our practice.

ECM Theatre is comprised of three Canadian feminist theatre-makers (Erin Maxfield, Gloria Mok, and Jessica Watkin), who share a healthy fascination with food, theatre, and activism. Inspired by French salons in the early 18th century, Nourishment began as a weekly meeting and writer’s circle to discuss current events and share ideas. Featuring a cast and creative team entirely comprised of female-identified artists, Nourishment is a collection of love letters, recipes, and protests about what it means to be a woman.

Writer and Lighting/Sound Designer Gloria Mok was the co-creator of the 2017 Next Stage Festival hit Silk Bath (NNNN). Writer and choreographer Jessica Watkin was the Blind Community Consultant on lemonTree creations and Buddies in Bad Times 2016 co-production of Body Politic (NNN). Actor Isabel Kanaan is a cast member on CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce 150 special, and has been praised for her roles in Hey ‘90s Kids, You’re Old (Winner of Toronto Fringe 2014 Patrons’ Pick) and Women at the 2016 Toronto Fringe (NNNN).

  • Nourishment plays at The Theatre Centre’s Franco Boni Theatre. (1115 Queen St. W.)
  • Tickets are $12. The festival also offers a range of money-saving passes for serious Fringers.
  • Tickets can be purchased online, by telephone (416-966-1062), from the Fringe Club at Scadding Court, and — if any remain — from the venue’s box office starting one hour before curtain.
  • Be aware that Fringe performances always start exactly on time, and that latecomers are never admitted.
  • Content Warnings: Sexual Content, Mature Language.
