Buddies in Bad Times Theatre presents The Rhubarb Festival

The Rhubarb Festival playing at Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre showcases experimental works from emerging artists

For the next two weeks, over one hundred artists will transform Buddies in Bad Times Theatre into a centre of creativity and experimentation.

There are several different categories which this year’s performances explore: the politics of our communities, spotlighting queer history, and confronting the fragility and resilience of our bodies.  The shows I caught yesterday explored the latter.

I had never been to a Rhubarb Festival before, and knew only to expect some avant-garde (experimental) theatre. What happens is that you are confronted with a choice upon arrival – shows run simultaneously in The Cabaret, to your left,  and The Chamber, to your right (or you can stay in the lobby for a while and catch some performance art – yesterday was a made-to-order café set up). Each show has a half-hour slot, and your ticket allows you to go back and forth between the two spaces – you pick and choose which show you want to attend at what time. It is a little bit confusing as to what show is going on where, but the staff is pretty helpful when it comes to that.

Review: Hughie (Alley Theatre Workshop)

Hughie playing at the Theatre Centre in Toronto perfectly captures the gritty feel of 1920s New York underground scene

I came away from Alley Theatre Workshop’s production of Hughie at The Theatre Centre thinking in a 1920s New York City wise guy accent and wishing for a glass of cheap scotch in a smoky piano bar.

The production captures the atmosphere perfectly: shabby poverty that dreams big in the dirty corners of the great American metropolis, jazz and blues all night long, too many cigarettes and booze that’s illegal so if you’re going to drink you may as well get seriously drunk. Review: In the Heights (Dancap)

Dancap presents the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

In the Heights is the story of the colourful Latino-American community of Washington Heights in uppermost tip of Manhattan. Set in present day, the neighborhood is experiencing rapid gentrification and change.

The show was conceived and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical but despite the accolade I admit I wasn’t particularly excited going in to the show. Continue reading Review: In the Heights (Dancap)

Interview: Mullet’s Night Show

The infamous zombie-clown Mullet takes to the stage at the Black Swan Comedy Tavern like the fixture of the Toronto theatre scene that he seems to be becoming. I feel like he should be our mascot in this way as he has most recently endeavored to present a monthly theatrical talk-show-style revue of various acts and cultural forces from Toronto’s milieu.

I saw the maiden voyage of the new phenomenon dubbed Mullet’s Night Show last month, and urge you all to take a sip from his goblet of Kool-Aid at this month’s offering, taking place this Thursday. If it is anything like what I saw the last time, you will be refreshed with an eclectic mix of performances by the brightest of Toronto’s up and coming stars, and conversations between them and the bluntly inquisitive Zombie Clown.
