From Press Release

PAPER PLAID PRODUCTIONS and Toronto Fringe Festival presents…

Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl

“Our eyes and ears are locked into Perry’s performance” NYC Stage Buddy

“Perry’s got a yummy voice – gravelly, smoky, distinct – I loved every minute of her singing and storytelling…” –

Edmonton Journal

“A ★★★★ performer” CBC Canada

After performing to critical acclaim in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Vancouver and New York City, Rebecca Perry brings her hit onewoman ‘showsical’ home to the Toronto Fringe Festival before embarking on her 2014 CAFF tour. Joanie Little, an “adorkable” graduate stuck paying off debt decides to make the most out her barista job by reporting about the humans of her coffee shop as though she were Jane Goodall herself, bushwhacking through the African jungle to observe the chimps. A tour-de-force that makes you laugh one minute and cry the next. Complete with live music, zombies, earthquakes, co-worker showdowns and a talking coffee mug for a boss.

Love’s Labour’s Lost – Toronto Fringe 2014 Press Release

From Press Release

Shakespeare BASH’d wants you to pledge this fraternity of love at the Victory Café with

Love’s Labour’s Lost

Director: James Wallis

Starring: Joshua Browne, Carly Chamberlain, Sheelagh Darling, Jade Douris, Christopher Fowler, Andrew Gaboury, Jeff Hanson, Rob Kraszewski, David Mackett, Suzette McCanny, Jesse Nerenberg, Julia Nish-Lapidus, Catherine Rainville, David Ross, Hallie Seline

Production Team: Matt Armour, Shera Everett-Singh, Rob Kraszewski, Julia Nish-Lapidus, Kristyn Nowers

Love’s Labour’s Lost runs during the Toronto Fringe Festival from July 2-13, 2014 at the Victory Café Upstairs (581 Markham Street, Toronto ON, just west of Bathurst, south of Bloor). Shakespeare BASH’d returns to the Victory Café after two straight years of sold-out Fringe Festival performances with Shakespeare’s zany comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost, this time with Shakespeare BASH’d Founder and Artistic Director James Wallis in the director’s chair. Wallis is ready to transport the audience into a raucous collegiate experience, turning the Victory Café into a fraternity house, with the action of the entire play taking place in the fraternity’s bar.

“The Victory will be truly transformed,” says Wallis. “Over the past two years, we’ve worked well within the confines of the space, but I want to re-imagine the ways in which we can use this bar setting. I want to push the aesthetic even further, immersing our audiences fully in the world of the play; providing an unforgettable night of entertainment for all of our patrons.”

Fans of Shakespeare BASH’d’s particular brand of raucous performance will recognize some familiar faces in Fringe-favourites David Ross, David Mackett and Julia Nish-Lapidus, but Wallis has expanded the company this year, bringing new members into the Shakespeare BASH’d family. “At its core, our company is about a shared love of the Bard,” says Wallis. “We love Shakespeare and the act of performing it in unconventional spaces. We want to give Toronto audiences something unique, which will allow them to look at Shakespeare in a different light. Love’s Labour’s Lost is a textually complex play, and we’re going to give our audiences the most thrilling experience yet, immersing them in this world, all while they drink the fine ales of the Victory Café.”

A Simple Twist of Faith – Toronto Fringe 2014 Fringe Release

From Press Release

New Artistic Collective to Commemorate WWI Centennial in Historic Space, A Simple Twist of Faith Tells a Moving True Story in an Unexpected Place

This summer, the Kiever Shul, a synagogue in the heart of Kensington Market, will be home to one of the Toronto Fringe Festival’s most compelling new shows. A Simple Twist of Faith is a heartfelt musical that tells the story of a Jewish American soldier during World War One whose experience in a German synagogue changes the course of his life. Audiences are treated to a mobile experience through the historic Kiever Shul in this innovative piece of Site-Specific theatre. The musical features some of Toronto’s finest musicians and shares an unforgettable story not to be missed. Just in time for the beginning of the hundredth anniversary of The Great War, this is a must-see Fringe show that will uplift and inspire.

A Simple Twist of Faith is written by Toronto cousins Evan and Rafe Malach. The musical was conceived after Evan was told the true story on a retreat in Yellowstone Park last summer. Taking a contemporary musical approach to contrast the historical context of the piece, Evan and Rafe have composed songs based on the lives and experiences of the central characters of the story.

The musical is the inaugural project of HOW- Harmony Over War, a new collective of artists that aims to make history relevant through creativity during the centennial of World War One. A pilot music video that parables WWI will be released along with the debut of the show.

The production features Adam Jesin in the role of Alex Lurye, the American soldier who becomes a successful businessman, and Evan Malach (winner of the 2012 Hallelujah Global Jewish Singing Contest) plays Herr Rosenau, the German congregant who invites Lurye into his home despite rejection from the rest the community. A Simple Twist of Faith is directed by Naomi Tessler of Branch Out Theatre, a group that uses theatre to promote nonviolence. Fringe veteran Scott White (Top Gun! The Musical, It’s Always You) rounds out the team as musical director.

The show is building buzz after a public reading at Musideum during Jewish Music Week. It promises an enjoyable Fringe experience for people of all ages and marks a meaningful moment in history for anyone hoping to honour this special time.

Little Miss Understood – Toronto Fringe 2014 Press Release

From Press Release

Mother-Daughter duo takes Little Miss Understood to

Toronto and Edmonton Fringe Festivals

Sandcastle Theatre presents Little Miss Understood, a candid and funny portrayal of the joys of raising a teenager. An original play by Stephanie Fowler and her 14-year-old daughter, Beatrice, Little Miss Understood will be performed at both the

Toronto and Edmonton Fringe Festivals this summer.

Stephanie conceived the idea for Little Miss Understood when she and Beatrice participated in HER Stories – an evening of stories and monologues by 16 women, presented at The Roxy Theatre in Owen Sound. Together they spent three months writing about issues that were important to each of them and wove those stories and ideas together into a 50-minute play.

Their appearance at the Toronto Fringe Festival will mark Stephanie and Beatrice’s third time on stage together. The pair starred in a production of Wait Until Dark in 2009 and HER Stories in 2013. Little Miss Understood has been performed twice in their home town of Owen Sound and will be on tour this summer. Audience members have called the show “eloquent and funny”, “well-crafted” and “spot-on in portraying the interaction between mother and child.”

Stephanie is the founder and director of Sandcastle Theatre, a company that provides theatre training for young people. Sandcastle Theatre also creates and tours shows on subjects relevant to youth, bringing live theatre to hundreds of elementary school students each year. Little

Miss Understood is Sandcastle Theatre’s first play written specifically for adult audiences.

Little Miss Understood provides an entertaining look at the frustrations of being and raising a teenager. Don’t miss this opportunity to catch

Gold Fever – Toronto Fringe 2014 Press Release

From Press Release

Award-Winning Keystone Theatre brings their new darkly funny SILENT FILM INSPIRED PLAY “GOLD FEVER” to the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival, beginning July 2nd.

Set in a barren and brutal landscape where fortunes are made and hearts are broken, “GOLD FEVER” explores how the dream of striking it rich brings out the best and the worst in people. Brilliant physical comedy and the spirit of the Klondike combine as Keystone brings unique characters and their stories to life. Played in the silent film style with no spoken dialogue, the voice of the piece is the original musical score played live by our award winning Music Director, David Atkinson. A few projected scenic backdrops and stylized title cards complete the picture.

This is Keystone Theatre’s third play in their signature silent film style. Their first play “The Belle of Winnipeg” garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for three Dora Mavor Moore Awards, winning for Outstanding Original Sound Design/Composition. Their next play“The Last Man on Earth” sold out at theToronto Festival of Clowns and headlined the Pearl Company Canadian Theatre Festival in Hamilton, before a hugely successful tour of Fringe festivals in Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton, selling out venues, winning awards and being held over. “The Last Man on Earth” was remounted to rave reviews at The Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs in April of this year.

This new play, “GOLD FEVER”, premiered at the Toronto Festival of Clownslast spring, once again breaking attendance records. A darker comedy than the first two, “GOLD FEVER” promises to push the Keystone Style into new territory, while still engaging with the magical world inspired by silent film.

Keystone Theatre’s past work has been called…
“simple theatrical magic ★★★★” – CBC Manitoba

“pure speechless delight ★★★★1/2” – Calgary Herald
