Swoon! might not make you fall in love, but it will certainly keep you entertained for an hour.
The show is a collective creation from artists like Alisa Palmer, Jason Maghanoy and Haley McGee that examines swooning, that moment when our heart gives itself over to someone for the first time. I was a bit worried that I would be in for 60 minutes of adorable “meet-cutes” but Swoon! does delve a bit deeper than that, giving us a peek at not just the first swoon but what happens afterward too. You might think that nothing could cheer you up as much as this gorgeous July weather. Well, you would be wrong. With Hugh Jackman in Concert playing at the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Hollywood actor has basically bottled and sold us two hours of sunshine.
I am going to try very hard to review this show as a professional and not as a red-blooded woman, but it’s going to be tough. Mr. Jackman oozes charm, and he knows it. But more importantly, he has a sense of humour about it. This is a man who can sing the opening riff to Dreamgirls with a straight face, but who also appears sincerely embarrassed when a shirt button pops open, as though half the women in the theatre didn’t buy a ticket specifically hoping to see that happen.
