Our cheap Toronto theatre picks for this week have been inspired by none other than our very own editor, Miss Megan Mooney. Every week, Megan highlights the shows that she’s most excited about seeing in our weekly eye-catching theatre listings. (And if she could clone herself 500 times over, she would see them all!). I’ve decided to further highlight her choices by choosing the least expensive of Megan’s selections and sharing them with you in this week’s Five for Twenty (Or Less) post. So, grab a little cash (we promise, you’ll only need a little!), and see cheap theatre that makes Megan’s heart flutter into a flurry of excitement! Enjoy! Here are all of the shows we wish we could get out and see this week! Take your pick from our list of great theatre escapes for the week of May 2, 2010:
The A.M.Y. Project (Artists Mentoring Youth) is turning 5! This amazing program gathers top female artists to mentor young Toronto women in the arts, encouraging them to use theatre and art as methods of self-expression. The project has been in full swing since 2005 and is co-directed by Claire Calnan and Weyni Mengesha, both award-winning theatre artists in their own right. This weekend, see the diverse youth ensemble of A.M.Y. mentees perform in Step Right Up, a circus show about human oddities. The show takes place at Theatre Passe Muraille on Friday, April 30 at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, May 1 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. A gala celebration celebrating A.M.Y.’s fifth birthday will follow Saturday’s 8 p.m. show, complete with performances, a CD release and a silent auction. Prices are excellent, too: Friday’s performance is PWYC, Saturday’s matinee is only $15, and it’s $30 for the Saturday night show and party, or just $10 for the party only. Tickets are available at artsboxoffice.ca or by telephone at 416-504-7529. Read on for more details, and please come out and support Toronto’s mentors and youth!
This week, we feature free Toronto theatre – yes, that’s right: all of our cheap Toronto theatre picks for this week cost nothing at all (well, one costs next to nothing, but it’s worth it!). We also suggest theatre-ish experiences, rather than the usual play. Comedy, readings and talent shows all qualify as theatre in their own way, and they should not be forsaken. Toronto has so much to offer by way of all shows that we figured we should highlight some non-traditional free theatre in the hopes that you will attend one or two of our suggestions, and then keep on going back for more. Enjoy!
The Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People just announced their 2010-2011 lineup, and we haven’t been this excited about theatre for young people in a long time. The upcoming season features nine diverse shows ranging in topic from The Invisible Girl, which deals with contemporary society’s pressure on young girls to be popular and fashionable, to As You Puppet, a puppeted adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
The keys that tie each show together are the themes of the 2010-2011 season: friendship, belonging and peer pressure. I definitely could have used some guidance on those issues when I was a kid, so I think LKTYP nailed it with this year’s lineup. Click here for the full press release, including descriptions of each scheduled show and details on ticket prices (which are very affordable!). Enjoy!
