Wayne Leung (1981-2019) Wayne was the Managing Editor of Mooney on Theatre from 2012 - 2019 and will be sorely missed. His death from an apparent heart attack was a loss not just to Mooney on Theatre, but also to the Toronto Theatre Community at large. You can read our publisher Megan Mooney's tribute to him here here. Wayne was a writer, editor and corporate communications professional who was thrilled to be a part of the Mooney on Theatre team. Wayne loved theatre ever since his aunt brought him to a production of Les Misérables at the tender age of ten . . . despite the fact that, at that age, the show’s plot was practically indiscernible and the battle scenes scared the bejeezus out of him. Wayne’s current list of likes ran the gamut from opera, ballet and Shakespeare to Broadway musicals, circus and Fringe theatre. Outside of the theatre Wayne’s interests included travel, technology and food.

Review: Tear the Curtain! (Electric Company/Canadian Stage)

Canadian Stage presents the Toronto premiere of Electric Company’s noir-style psychological thriller Tear the Curtain, blurring the boundaries between theatre and film.

The Canadian Stage opens its 2012-13 season with Electric Company’s Tear the Curtain; a gritty, disorienting psychological thriller and a stylistic tour-de-force hybrid of theatre and film.

Toronto audiences last got a taste of the unique, genre-melding style of Vancouver’s Electric Company in 2010 when Canadian Stage presented their Studies in Motion, a play incorporating intricate projections and choreography in its storytelling. Director Kim Collier also helmed the Mark Rothko bio-play RED for Canadian Stage last season.

A Letter from David Mirvish re: Closing the Princess of Wales Theatre

Today, Mirvish sent the following open letter to the media about his plans to build a new condo complex in the Entertainment District which includes the “removal” of the Princess of Wales Theatre he built in 1993. Despite his rationale for demolishing the theatre, as I expressed in a piece yesterday, losing one of Toronto’s major theatres for condos is a bitter pill to swallow.

Review: Proud a new play by Michael Healey

Proud, Michael Healey’s brilliant satirical play finally gets its day in the sun at Toronto’s Berkeley Street Theatre

I’m originally from Ottawa so I’m obviously a political junkie. Growing up in the shadow of the Hill you can’t help but become engrossed in the machinations of the federal government. Ottawa is a small, insular town and politics is something of a spectator sport there. Continue reading Review: Proud a new play by Michael Healey
