There are plenty of laughs to be had in theatre this week. With Soulpepper’s Impulse Festival beginning December 12 along with a number of other hysterical holiday themed improv and comedy opening this week, you’re bound to find something to defeat the winter blahs and tickle your funny bone.
Tis the season, as trees awkwardly make their way into livingrooms to be set up and lit up for the holiday stretch, for wallet-friendly theatre fun fit for the whole family. A relaxing reprieve right before the mall crowds and pre-holiday frustrations really settle in, this is the best time to bundle up your little one and take the whole gang along to see Scrooge bah-humbug his way to the stage or your favorite Robert Munsch book brought to life.
The underdog, the misfit, the outcast, the odd one out, the reject — call them what you will, this week’s selection of cheap seat theatre is all about those odds and ends of society. The ones that don’t quite fit in. Whether they’re the ones you want to cheer for in the end, or they’re hated by the masses so much that you can’t wait to see them get their dues, you owe it to yourself to take some time out this week and sit in for some great theatre where the unsung and the left behind take center stage.
This week’s selections of theatre on a budget are all about lovers’ relationships gone awry. What happens when two people fall out of love, try to rekindle love or simply rediscover who they really are in and out of love. As told through tragedy, comedy, and even dance (with a selection from the good ole’ Bard thrown in for good measure), these stories may prove better than soaps on the tube.
This week’s collection of theatre on a budget explores relationships (between spouses, estranged spouses, parents and offspring), the various forms they can take and all the human pitfalls, hiccups and tragedies that can befall them. These stories will make you laugh, cry, but most of all think and consider the relationships in your life.
