Engage in some funny bone activity with our pickings for affordable theatre this week. We’ve got dark humour, dancing and singing male gynecologists, clowns galore, spoken word and improv to name a few examples. Laugh a little louder, will ya?
Festivals, fundraisers and tournaments, oh my! The warm weather has struck and so starts the exciting part of the theatre season. There are pockets of thespian action blooming all over the city, so why not splurge on a festival pass and enjoy some. Or take is slow, one show at a time. (P.S. It’s great prep for the Fringe festival…)
Our affordable picks for the week include theatre and dance pieces that feature women, from the playwrights and choreographers to the characters to the actors. (With maybe one exception.)
Our cheap theatre picks for this week feature some solo shows, some fledgling dramas eager to stretch their wings, and some celebratory play readings. All of the events are either free or pay what you can, so there’s no need to worry about splurging on trying out something new.
This week The Playwright Project begins, a seven production company/seven neighbourhood/seven night series featuring seven plays by Sam Shepard. Every night from May 1st to 7th each production company rotates to a different neighbourhood, bringing their show to new venues and new audiences. They’ve got Toronto covered – from the Beaches to the Junction and every ‘hood in between. You can stroll over to your local bar and let each act come to you. Plus – it’s cheap theatre. Individual shows are $15, or you can grab an affordable pass if you’re up for a weeklong theatre bender. Mooney on Theatre will also be covering the project, so check back for reviews.
