Red One Theatre Collective brings The Skriker to fantastical life at the Storefront Theatre in Toronto
If you go down to the Storefront this week (or next), you’re in for a big surprise. If you go down to the theatre this week, you’d better go in disguise! For every creature that ever there was has gathered there for certain because… Red One Theatre Collective has brought to life—vibrant, haunting life!—Caryl Churchill’s fantastical play The Skriker.
My date and I were blown away by this production. “I think that was the best thing I’ve ever seen!” she told me as we walked away from the theatre, our eyes sparkling. The Second City presented the Cream of Comedy showcase featuring up and coming Toronto comedians
I had the pleasure of attending the 19th annual Cream of Comedy showcase last night at Toronto’s Second City. This night is a little different from other Second City shows, not in terms of the fantastic talent’s ability to make you laugh, but because it’s an annual juried competition that recognizes and encourages up and coming comedic talent in our city. There is a cash prize of $5,000 for the winner. Last night was hosted by Jeff McEnery featured five acts: four comics and an improv group. I’m happy to say that nothing about the night felt amateurish. Everyone on stage was confident, there was no fumbling or second guessing which I was rather impressed by. Well, the mayoral election is over. And whether or not you’re entirely happy with the results, now we can focus on more important things – like Halloween! In between planning your costume, and figuring out where you’d like to spend the evening (or if you’d like to spend the evening watching scary movies and eating candy at home), it’s worth noting that lots of Halloween-themed theatre will be going on in the city this week. Opera Atelier’s Alcina mixes video projection with period conventions
From the moment I walked into the theatre and saw the large scale backdrop depicting rolling, sinuous sand dunes, I knew that Opera Atelier’s production of Alcina by G. F. Handel was going to be a bit of a departure from their usual style. Usually, Opera Atelier productions make use of a consistent recipe that is working for them. It consists of fairly diligent adherence to period conventions.
