THE COMPLEX:
A TORONTO TALE

Toronto based theatre company, Bound to Create Theatre, is thrilled to present the world premiere of The Complex: A Toronto Tale, a new work by Jack Grinhaus, as part of the 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival.

THIS PLAY IS ABOUT TORONTO.  IT IS ABOUT US . BY US. FOR US.
Based on interviews with Torontonians over the last five years, The Complex: A Toronto Tale is an intense parabolic play that explores what it means to be a Torontonian. By investigating the complexities of human nature and how they define both who we are as individuals and as a collective population, the play explores what binds us together and what tears us apart.

Through collaborative, non-traditional storytelling, THE COMPLEX communicates in all the languages of theatre. This innovative, visceral fusion of text-based and physical-theatre traces the memories of four survivors of a Canada Day fire and explores how each of their lives and personal struggles relate to the eccentricities and stresses that come from living in Toronto.

With Dora Award winning artists Lauren Brotman, Lyon Smith and Kimberly Purtell, Dora Nominee Dale Yim, celebrated interdisciplinary artist Katherine Duncanson, Shaw Alumnus Richard Stewart, Stratford Designer Joanna Yu and others, this multi-cultural Toronto-based cast and creative team, fully reflects the current pulse of our city.

An MFA Graduate from York University’s Theatre program and member of the 2010 BASH! Director’s Residency (Canadian Stage Company), Jack Grinhaus recently assisted Morris Panych with ART at the Canadian Stage Company, Sarah Stanley with Seven for the City of Wine Festival at Theatre Passe Muraille and directed Carmen (Opera Lirica),The Trial of Jeremy Hinzman (Foundry Theatre), and Jenny’s Room  (B2C) for Factory Lab Cab.

Bound to Create Theatre was formed in 2003 by theatre artists Lauren Brotman and Jack Grinhaus. B2C is committed to providing theatre that engages audiences with familiar and relevant themes presented in unfamiliar ways. Through innovative theatrical styles and art forms, we explore the diverse Toronto experience and its connection with Canadian and international perspectives. Our aim is to create a ‘New Mythology’ in Canada, essential to the development and
promotion of its rich cultural history, which can have resonance both at home and abroad.
