Horse – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release:

Toronto Fringe show HORSE takes over

Kensington Market alleyway

Long before Dora Award-winning playwright Ned Dickens was known for his ambitiousseven-play cycle, City of Wine, he wrote HORSE. After 10 years on the shelf, emergingdirector Leora Morris has pulled it down, dusted it off, and is giving it a new life – in aKensington Market alleyway. And this world premiere of HORSE is not for the faint of heart.

Inspired by Dickens’ years of work with Toronto street kids and the Ontario CoalitionAgainst Police Violence, HORSE takes audiences deep into the world of addiction, homelessness, violence and trauma. The play tells the story of Cassie, a Toronto streetkid in crisis. She witnessed something terrifying but can’t remember what. As fragmentsof her memory play out violently around her, Cassie works with a psychiatrist at CAMH to solve the mystery.

Originally intended for the stage, director Leora Morris has chosen to set her productionin the exact space Dickens used as his inspiration – a badly lit, grungy alleyway next tothe Last Temptation Restaurant and Bar. “I’m not interested in invoking a street space ina traditional theatre,” she says. “I want to see what happens when we take our story to itsorigin and enter the actual world of the characters.”

HORSE marks the inaugural production of Theatre Hetaerae and stars five of Toronto’smost talented emerging young artists, Diana Bentley, Alexis Budd, Eleanor Hewlings,Steve Schwabl and Tim Walker.

HORSE will run from July 6th – 17th, 2011 in the alleyway next to the Last TemptationRestaurant and Bar (12 Kensington Ave) as part of the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival.Due to space restrictions, only fifteen tickets will be available for each show. Interestedpress are encouraged to RSVP early to ensure their complimentary tickets are put aside.
