Tales of a Fringe Convert (how I learned to stop worrying and love the Fringe)

Toronto Fringe tent

Yay! It’s summer! Time for Fringe; my new favourite time of year.

I can hardly wait for the Toronto Fringe to start on July 3rd. I’m as excited as a kid waiting for her birthday.  (Actually, technically July 3rd is my birthday, but I’m much more excited about Fringe.)

When I say “Fringe” I mean the Toronto Fringe Festival, an annual theatre (and more) festival that turns 25 this year. I’ve fallen into the habit of saying “Fringe” and assuming that everyone knows what it is. I’m amazed when I’m met with blank stares in response to my excited exclamations of “Fringe starts next week!”

The 8th Day (ChickenWing Theatre) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

The 8th Day - Toronto Fringe 2013
On Tuesday afternoon I finally got to see The 8th Day playing as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival and I loved it. It’s a very funny show. I had started to think it just wasn’t going to happen. This was Mooney on Theatre’s third try. Missed it last week because of a streetcar delay. Missed it on Monday because of the storm. Today I got to a block north of Queen on Bathurst and the power was out! Even though I wasn’t feeling very hopeful I decided to walk to Theatre Passe Muraille and see if they had power. They did! Yay! Continue reading The 8th Day (ChickenWing Theatre) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

Mooney on Theatre Recommends – 2013 Toronto Fringe Festival

Fringe-Club-Twinkly-Lights_sm1

This past weekend Mooney on Theatre sent its dedicated team of 18 writers and 5 editors to cover all 141 shows* in this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival! With the sheer number of shows available at the festival, picking the ones you want to see can be a daunting task.

Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy the Fringe is to not overly plan it out and just go and take a chance on something that happens to be playing at a given time; it’s only ten bucks and about an hour of your time and you may discover something you think is amazing.

If you’re still feeling a bit overwhelmed by the number of shows at the Fringe and are looking for a place to start, we’ve asked our staff to tell us about their favourite shows they’ve seen at this year’s festival. We hope our staff picks can help you navigate the Fringe.

If you’ve seen something you think is amazing that you think others should go see please let us know by leaving a comment.

Happy Fringing!
