TACHYCARDIA: WHEN THE HEART IS RIPPED AND THE MIND IS TORN
Two young lovers believe they feel the same way about each other, but once they finally reveal it, they realize they might not be as connected as they had thought. Influenced by a Woman in Red and their inner thoughts, they struggle to come to terms with what it means to be in love and how much they will sacrifice to be with each other. Tachycardia is an exploration of the physiological effects of heartbreak on the human psyche and the determination required to recover.
The show is based off of the playwright’s personal experience with heartbreak and both the physical and mental effects it has on a person. Research was done into the body’s response to traumatic events, and that was incorporated into the story. The company’s name, dysrhythmia, is “a medical condition causing an irregular heart rate”. In rehearsal, the company has explored what it physically feels like to have your heart broken, what it feels like to be trapped inside one’s mind and the strength that one’s inner thoughts has over one’s actions. As a company, Dysrhythmia Theatre has shared personal experiences involving heartbreak, self-doubt and isolation to help fully flesh and develop the story.
The production features recent graduates from York University, including Maite Jacobson, Victoria Stacey and Leighton Williams. Performer Maite Jacobson and stage manager Nicole De Angelis were involved in Karfiol Kollectiv’s breakout performance of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui which was nominated for Best Ensemble Cast at the My Theatre Awards. Leighton Williams performed in Theatre @ York’s production of Road directed by Mark Wilson. The director and playwright, Rebecca Gismondi, is also a recent graduate of York University and a published playwright through the New York Theatre Intensives program affiliated with the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City.
Dysrhythmia Theatre presents Tachycardia as a visceral, sensory experience that attacks audiences and challenges the relationship between the mind and body.
