Wayne Leung (1981-2019) Wayne was the Managing Editor of Mooney on Theatre from 2012 - 2019 and will be sorely missed. His death from an apparent heart attack was a loss not just to Mooney on Theatre, but also to the Toronto Theatre Community at large. You can read our publisher Megan Mooney's tribute to him here here. Wayne was a writer, editor and corporate communications professional who was thrilled to be a part of the Mooney on Theatre team. Wayne loved theatre ever since his aunt brought him to a production of Les Misérables at the tender age of ten . . . despite the fact that, at that age, the show’s plot was practically indiscernible and the battle scenes scared the bejeezus out of him. Wayne’s current list of likes ran the gamut from opera, ballet and Shakespeare to Broadway musicals, circus and Fringe theatre. Outside of the theatre Wayne’s interests included travel, technology and food.

Review: Odysseo (Cavalia)

Cavalia presents its new equine fantasy show Odysseo in Toronto’s Port Lands through June 3, 2012.

I love horses, who doesn’t? They’re beautiful, graceful, intelligent animals. Unfortunately, being a city boy, my experience with horses is limited to some occasional trail riding. Still, I have a profound appreciation and respect for these magnificent creatures.

Founded in 2003 in Montreal, Cavalia has been touring the world with its blend of theatrical circus and equestrian arts. It’s perhaps a bit reductive and unoriginal to refer to it as “Cirque du Soleil with horses” but the comparison is apt; Cavalia’s founder Normand Latourelle was also a founding member of Cirque du Soleil. Review: The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs (Outside the March/Theatre Passe Muraille)

Outside the March turns Mike Daisey’s quasi-factual monologue exposing Apple’s labour practices into a fascinating piece of meta-theatre.

I find it extremely difficult to discuss the abuse of workers in Chinese factories because the issue is so close to my heart. My family is from the Guangdong province of China, the heart of the country’s manufacturing sector. I have relatives there still and I’ve been to the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone and seen first-hand the horrible conditions these workers are subjected to on a daily basis.

Review: And Tell Sad Stories of the Deaths of Queens (Afterglow Theatre/The Tennessee Project)

A rarely produced queer-themed Tennessee Williams play performed in a Danforth pizza restaurant.

First of all, I love the idea of The Tennessee Project; a collection of local theatre companies producing lesser-known one-act Tennessee Williams plays in neighbourhoods across Toronto with shows rotating venues nightly. What an awesome way to make theatre accessible!

The Tennessee Project also doesn’t perform in traditional theatres, the venues are a variety of unique local establishments; bars, community centers, cafés, art galleries and, in the case of the performance I attended last night, The Magic Oven, an organic pizza restaurant in the Danforth.

Review: The Night of the Iguana (Hart House Theatre)

Toronto’s Hart House Theatre presents the Tennessee Williams play The Night of the Iguana through March 10, 2012.

Tennessee Williams was one of the most prolific playwrights of the 20th century. Many of us studied his work in school but despite his notoriety most people are probably only really familiar with a handful of plays out of the dozens he penned throughout his career.
