fringe-for-free-graphicDid you miss us, Toronto? We’ve certainly missed you! Fringe is our favourite time of the year, and we love nothing more than sharing it with you — so every summer, by the kindness of dozens of Fringe Festival companies, we get to literally give it away.

Starting today, we’ll be posting a daily list of 5 shows. Shoot us an email and you might win a pair of tickets to one of the hottest productions in town.

Of course, we’re posting other stuff as well: comprehensive coverage of the festival, with a review of every single production by the end of opening weekend; features, interviews, photographs and summaries; news, analysis, whimsies and warnings, we’ll have it all.

But while this is all fine and well, Fringe is about seeing theatre! So click “Read More” for the contest rules and a little something about the 5 shows we’ve got lined up for June 29, opening day!

Getting Odd (HollyWould Productions) 2016 Toronto Fringe Festival Review

The thing I love about The Toronto Fringe Festival is that you never really know when you will get that glimpse of a gem. That special something that makes you go ‘wow’. Getting Odd was that special gem for me. This was the last show I watched after a long day of fringing. I had no idea what to expect. But by the end of the show, I was walking away humming to the Beach Boys song ‘Wouldn’t it be nice’. If I wasn’t in public, I’d probably would have started dancing too! Now Getting Odd is not a musical BUT there are some catchy song and dance numbers in it that are playful and fun. Needless to say, Getting Odd was a thrill ride that had me at the edge of my seat throughout the play.

THE UNENDING (Convergence Theatre) 2016 Toronto Fringe Review

THE UNENDING, a collection of three short site-specific plays  now running at the Toronto Fringe Festival, has a lot of buzz going for it. It’s presented by Convergence Theatre, the minds behind the smash Fringe hits The Gladstone Variations and Autoshow.

The show begins at the well-loved Aunties and Uncles diner, moving to two other “secret” locations. The playwrights are legends August Strindberg and Samuel Beckett, as well as Convergence founder Julie Tepperman. This time, it seems the buzz is justified — and not just because there’s free cake; Convergence continues its reign of well-staged, thoughtful shows in intriguing locations.

20120707_2075_smCover Toronto Fringe for Mooney on Theatre

Mooney on Theatre is looking for folks to review Toronto Fringe Festival shows, which run from June 29 to July 10, 2016.

In a lot of ways Fringe Festivals embody what Mooney on Theatre holds dear, theatre accessibility. They are cheap theatre that is attended by a wide range of people, many of whom are not theatregoers the rest of the year.

With this in mind, we put a lot of effort into providing as much coverage of the Toronto Fringe Festival as we can, including: covering each show in a relatively substantive way; running contests for free tickets; reporting on the buzz surrounding the fringe and more. If you want an idea of what the coverage will likely look like, check out the Fringe Festival category on this site. To make this happen, we need to bring on more contributors.
