Coming to Toronto Fringe 2009: THE GOOD THIEF

From Press Release

flaming locomotive productions and The Glen Morris Theatre presents

THE GOOD THIEF by Conor McPherson

as part of The Toronto Fringe Festival

“He was a shoe repair man.  I hate people with skills who can do stuff.”

The Good Thief.

The Canadian premiere of a stunning one man theatre show, The Good Thief by internationally acclaimed Irish playwright and Tony Award nominee, Conor McPherson (The Weir, Shining City, The Seafarer).

Sent on a routine job, a hapless Dublin hard man finds himself caught between two crime bosses, and against his own intentions becomes a fugitive for kidnapping and murder.  Add to this the dilemma of what to do with his newly acquired hostages, the wife and daughter of the man he was sent to deal with!  A tale of tragedy, comic hard luck and lurid violence that won the 1994 Stewart Parker Award.

The Good Thief  features Western Australian based actor Allan Girod, recognisable to audiences in the Australian TV series Lockie Leonard as Senior Constable Snowden (‘Snowy’) and in the lead role of Conscience by Bolder Pictures, which premiered at the 2009 Cannes Festival’s Short Film Corner.

“flaming locomotive is my initiative, a theatre company I’ve created to produce high quality and evocative works designed for touring.  ‘The Good Thief’ was an Australian premiere in Perth 2007, it had its Festival debut at the Adelaide Fringe 2008 and the Toronto Fringe is the company’s debut international presentation.” said Allan Girod.

Director Michael McCall summed up the playwright, “McPherson has become heir to the great Irish tradition of absorbing story telling.  What makes McPherson accessible as a modern playwright is his combination of the descriptive genius of James Joyce with the machine gun dialogue of David Mamet.”

“He was a shoe repair man.  I hate people with skills who can do stuff.”

    The Good Thief.

“At his best, Conor McPherson is a writer who combines great character comedy with a real sense of pathos.”
