The Canadian Comedy Awards are in a different place every year.  This year, their 10th anniversary the awards are in Saint John, NB.  So, guess where I’m heading in October? 

All the nominees have been announced (the ‘public’ nominees, the ones anyone can vote on, were announced a week later than the ‘industry’ nominees) and voting has begun. 

General public can vote in the Radio, Internet and Canadian Comedy Person of the Year awards.  You can register as a member of the public and vote on these categories until 5pm (not sure which time zone) on Friday July 31, 2009.

Voting for the other awards is limited to industry folks, and the registering to vote for industry folks has closed.  So, if you didn’t know about this before, well, it’s not going to help you just now.  Oh, and in these other categories, Young People Fucking would seem to be a big favourite, it got 8 nominations.  Which is just fine with me, it was a great movie – I highly recommend seeing it.

Something else that’s worth noting is that One Woman Show – one of my favourite (and most surprising) Fringe shows ever, has been nominated.

Two other shows that were nominated have been positively reviewed on Mooney on Theatre – Barack To The Future and It’s Just a Phase.

The 2009 Comedy Network’s Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival announced today on canadiancomedy.ca, the list of nominees for 2009 Canadian Comedy Awards. The nominees were announced in style in a special video announcement by Canadian Comedy Award past winners Nikki Payne and Pat Thornton. The acclaimed film Young People Fucking (YPF), leads the way with eight nominations. This year, the 10-year anniversary show hits the shores of Saint John, New Brunswick. The four-day, laughter-filled celebration runs from Oct. 1 to 4.

In the category Film – Performance by a Male comedic actors Josh Dean, Ennis Esmer and Peter Oldring receive nods for their roles in YPF. In the category Film – Performance by a Female, comedic actors Kristin Booth, Natalie Lisinska and Carly Pope each picked up a nod for their characters in YPF. Writer/director Martin Gero is nominated for Film – Director for YPF and Martin Gero and Aaron Abrams for Film – Writing for YPF.

Last year comedy favourite Jeremy Hotz – who took home the prestigious Dave Broadfoot Award – receives three nominations. He has two nominations for the category Television – Taped Live Performance for Just for Laughs Gala and What A Miserable Show This Is. The other nod is for Male Stand Up.

The hilarious Debra DiGiovanni also gets some love with two nominations in the category Television – Taped Live Performance for the Halifax Comedy Festival and for Female Stand Up.

The Award ceremony takes place on Friday, October 2 at the Imperial Theatre which will be taped for broadcast by The Comedy Network to be aired at a later date. The Last Laugh Gala rocks the Imperial Theatre on Saturday October 3. The Last Laugh Gala is a crazy fast paced variety extravaganza and will feature the year’s top talent and is sure to be the best evening of comedy north of the 49th parallel.
