Weight Loss World: Toronto 2010 Fringe Preview

From Press Release

“I lose weight when I cry!”

Written and Directed by Chris Michael Burns

Sally Pitt is an artist. Tommy Wright is a banker. Marcia McAllister is a teacher. Tim Lewis is a cable repairman. All have weight issues that have spiralled out of control. They turn to Daisy, the director ofWeight Loss World, whose techniques are unconventional at best. Daisy makes each of her patients sign a contract that stipulates they cannot leave until they have reached their stated goal weights (which are always dangerously low). Once inside, everybody wants to return to their lives as soon and as thin as possible, so the pressure is on and the clock is ticking.

Set in a last resort, rapid weight loss facility, WEIGHT LOSS WORLD is an outrageous satire about desperate people taking desperate measures. Both scathing and politically incorrect, it forces the audience to choose between laughing and looking inward. Loosely inspired by Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit, playwright and director Chris Michael Burns has created an absurd world in which hell is ones own body.

Starring a hilarious cast and using the quest to be thin as a parable, WEIGHT LOSS WORLD exhibits extreme circumstances to expose the physical and psychological dangers of contemporary vanity and sameness.
