A beautiful ode to the late poet Xu Lizhi, I Swallowed a Moon Made of Iron gives a voice to migrant workers, expressing the hidden lives and hardships of those working in grim factories in Shenzhen, China. Presented by Canadian Stage at the Berkeley Street Theatre Njo Kong Kie performs, produces, composes and directs the musical and theatrical mix.

Review: Inner Elder (NativeEarth/Nightwood Theatre)

In the era of Truth and Reconciliation, Michelle Thrush’s one-woman show, Inner Elder, is an engaging breath of fresh air for anyone who hasn’t gotten around to reading the report yet. Written by Michelle Thrush and directed by Karen Hines, the hour-long show is part storytelling, part stand-up and very funny. Thrush effectively uses humour to tackle heavy subject matter such as anti-Indigenous racism and stereotypes, residential schools and land claims. Review: The Brothers Size (Soulpepper)

Soulpepper Theatre presents a play by Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney in Toronto

Soulpepper Theatre presents The Brothers Size, currently on stage at the Young Center for the Performing Arts, an intimate and hypnotic exploration into brotherhood paired with Yoruban orishas. Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, Academy Award winner for his screenplay for Moonlight, and directed by Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu, this performance combines live music, ritual, and the characters’ highly nuanced relationships making for a magical experience.
